2013-14 Dixon Trophy Final Standings
All-Time Standings
Harrisburg, Pa. – California University has earned the title as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's top all-around program by winning the Dixon Trophy for the 2013-14 academic year. It is the second time California has laid claim to the award, having won its other crown during the 2008-09 campaign.
The Dixon Trophy is named after F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. In its 19th year of existence, each year it is awarded to the PSAC institution that accumulates the top score based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records.
The award is given to the program which generates the top average point value among each PSAC Championship sport it sponsors. Each sport champion earns 18 points - based on the league's membership total - and descending point values are awarded for respective placement.
California generated an average score of 12.28 points among its 18 league sports, topping second-place Shippensburg, which netted an 11.95 point average. Last year's champion, West Chester, finished in third at 11.80, closely followed by Indiana (Pa.) (11.50), Edinboro (11.31) and Slippery Rock (11.28).
The Vulcan program led all schools through the winter season then solidified its standing by claiming PSAC titles in women's tennis and softball during the spring. California also earned a league crown in women's soccer and had runner-up finishes in women's volleyball, and men's and women's golf. The women's programs at California led all PSAC schools with a 14.40 average.
Shippensburg won three PSAC Championships in track and field, consisting of men's indoor and both men's and women's outdoor. The Raiders placed second in field hockey and softball, and finished in the top three, either overall or in their division, in football, men's and women's cross country, and women's soccer and volleyball.
Among six top-three finishes for West Chester were the league's top spot in men's and women's swimming and runner-up placements in men's basketball and women's soccer. The Golden Rams' 11.80 average featured an impressively balanced effort, as the men's teams averaged 11.70 and their women averaged 11.88.
IUP finished in the top five for the fourth time in six years despite not winning a PSAC title in 2013-14. The Crimson Hawks had five top-three finishes, including second-place showings in women's swimming and tennis. Edinboro claimed league supremacy in wrestling, men's tennis and women's basketball to join California and Shippensburg as PSAC Champions in three sports. The Fighting Scots also netted runner-up placements in men's and women's cross country. Slippery Rock, which had the highest average among's men's programs (14.29), won PSAC titles in men's soccer and women's indoor track and field.
California became the fourth PSAC school to win the Dixon Trophy in multiple years. Shippensburg owns the most titles with seven, while Bloomsburg and Lock Haven have won three apiece. West Chester, Kutztown, Millersville and Slippery Rock have also won an all-sports crown.
Note:
In 2012-13 the league instituted a new format to calculate the Dixon Trophy standings. In previous years only an institution’s top 12 finishes – six men’s and six women’s – were used to calculate a point total. Now the standings are based on an average score for each of the 23 PSAC Championship sports that an institution sponsors.
