WEEK 4 - SEPTEMBER 21-28 Standings | Statistical Leaders | Schedule/Results Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Sean McCartney West Chester (Sr. / QB) Doylestown, Pa. / Archbishop Wood Senior quarterback Sean McCartney completed 18-of-25 passes for 307 yards and three touchdowns in just one half, leading No. 10 West Chester to a 62-7 victory over Millersville. McCartney completed nine of his first 10 passes, including the first seven while engineering touchdown drives on the Golden Rams' first three possessions. On McCartney's final drive of the game, he took West Chester on a five-play, 55-yard touchdown scoring drive in the two-minute drill. He hit Mike Doty for a 21-yard touchdown strike in the final seconds of the first half. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Justin Shirk Bloomsburg (Sr. / MLB) Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin Bloomsburg senior middle linebacker Justin Shirk put-in a dominating defensive performance in a 38-30 win over Shippensburg. He posted 15 tackles, one off a career-high, two sacks, 4.0 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Shirk’s forced fumble came in first quarter with Huskies down 3-0 inside the Shippensburg 20 yard line, allowing teammate Dylan Stair to recover and turn-in a 17-yard touchdown return for 7-3 lead. Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Brock Jones Gannon (Jr. / RB) Peninsula, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit Gannon’s Brock Jones led the Golden Knights to a 33-7 victory at Clarion, helping them win their first four games for the first time since 1949. Jones rushed for a career-high 213 yards, on 32 carries averaging 6.7 yards per carry against a Clarion defense that was allowing just 136 rushing yards per game this season. He also made two catches for 20 yards to generate 233 all-purpose yards, the 12th-highest single-game total in school history. With Gannon leading just 10-7 at the half, Jones came out and rushed for 127 yards in the second stanza, including 84 yards on 14 carries in the fourth quarter. Football: Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Jawan Turner California (So. / DL) Pittsburgh, Pa. / Woodland Hills California’s Jawan Turner recorded 3.5 sacks for 15 yards and 4.0 tackles for loss on Saturday, as Cal U earned a 34-16 victory over Edinboro. He finished the game with five tackles, three solo, and also added two pass break-ups. Turner helped the Vulcans tally a season-high seven sacks, as the Vulcans limited the Fighting Scots to negative-12 rushing yards, the third-fewest total in Edinboro history. TEAM NOTES Bloomsburg The No. 13/14 Huskies moved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC with a 38-30 victory over Shippensburg on Saturday. Quarterback Tim Kelly had his best day of the year, completing 14 of 21 passes for 252 yards and a touchdown while DJ McFadden caught four passes for a career-high 127 yards. Eddie Mateo moved into a tie for sixth all-time in Huskies career rushing touchdowns with three score on Saturday to move his total to 27. Justin Shirk paced the defense with 15 tackles, two sacks, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble. The Huskies, who entered the week leading the nation with 15 forced turnovers, created another big play on defense, scoring the first touchdown of the game on a 17-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Dylan Stair. Next up is a trip to Cheyney this week. California The Vulcans scored 28-unanswered points in the first half before claiming a 34-16 victory over Edinboro on Saturday. Cal U has now won 10-consecutive meetings against Edinboro, including six-straight at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans recorded a season-high seven sacks and held the Fighting Scots to negative-12 rushing yards on 24 attempts. Cal U last held an opponent to negative rushing yards in 2010 (Edinboro; minus-4). Sophomore DL Jawan Turner recorded 4.0 TFL and 3.5 sacks in the victory. Junior QB James Harris finished with 260 passing yards and two touchdowns while attempting only 10 passes in the second half. Junior RB Terrell Roberson scored a pair of rushing touchdowns against Edinboro and now has five rushing scores in the last two weeks. The Vulcans committed eight penalties for 90 yards and another two penalties were off-setting. Cheyney It was a long night for the Wolves (0-4:0-3) as they fell 74-0 to Kutztown (2-2:2-1) as the offense struggled and the defense gave up 572 total yards. The Cheyney defense spent more than 36 minutes on the field as CU’s Isaiah Fleming led all players with a career high 19 tackles. The senior was also credited with a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. Kutztown forced a safety on the Wolves first possession and scored touchdowns on their first two offensive possessions to take a 16-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Kutztown added two more touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 30-0 lead as the teams traded sides of the field. Two turnovers and a blocked field goal added to the Wolves problems in the opening quarter. The Golden Bears added 17 points in the third quarter putting points up in each of their three possessions. Kutztown added 14 more points in the final quarter to round out the scoring. The Wolves were credited with only 17 yards rushing and 30 yards passing. KU was credited with 300 yards passing and 272 yards rushing. Cheyney did force two fumbles but surrendered four turnovers of their own. Things don’t get any easier for the Wolves as they host league-leading Bloomsburg next Saturday at 1:00 PM. Clarion Clarion lost its first PSAC-West game on Saturday – a 33-7 decision to Gannon, in front of 5,500 during ALF/Homecoming at Memorial Stadium. Connor Simmons led two, first quarter drives – the second culminated in a 7-yard td run from Simmons giving the Eagles the lead at 0:34 of the first quarter. Gannon scored in the second, giving the Knights a 10-7 halftime lead. Gannon scored 23 unanswered second half points to put the game away. Simmons completed 7 of 19 passes for 96 yards, while Bobby Thomas rushed for 42 and Delrece Williams 38 yards. Two-time All-American Julian Howsare had 5 tackles, giving him 201 now in his career. Clarion travels to Mercyhurst on Saturday for a 1pm kickoff. The game will be produced by Sportsfever TV and will be live on ESPN 3, blue Ridge Cable and Fox Sports Ohio. East Stroudsburg ESU improved to 3-1 (2-1 PSAC) with a 48-21 win over Lock Haven. Warriors head coach Denny Douds entered the NCAA’s all-division top 10 in games coached (422), tying former Delaware head coach Tubby Raymond. Douds, in his 41st year, has coached more games at one institution than all but five coaches in NCAA football history. He extended his PSAC record for career wins to 247, and is 3 wins from becoming the 20th NCAA coach to reach 250 career victories. R-Jr. QB Matt Soltes threw for 301 yards and 4 TD and ran for another, moving into 2nd at ESU and 13th in PSAC history with 70 career TD passes. Soltes leads the PSAC in passing (371.0 ypg) and total offense (406.8 ypg) and ranked 2nd in DII in both categories last week. R-So. TB Robert Healy had 15 carries for 117 yards and a TD and 2 catches for 26 yards, all in the 1st half. Healy is 3rd in the PSAC in yards from scrimmage (148.8 ypg) and has 314 rushing yards, 281 receiving yards and 6 total TD. R-Sr. TE Steven Jones had a career-high 7 catches for 92 yards and 2 TD. ESU limited Lock Haven to 273 total yards and R-Sr. DL Bryan Thomson, a D2football.com preseason All-America selection, and 6 tackles and 2 sacks. Thomson and R-Sr. DE Brandon Gattelli both have 18 career sacks, t-2nd among active PSAC players. Thomson was one of 3 PSAC players named semifinalists for the Campbell Trophy on Thursday. ESU will look for its first win over Shippensburg since 2008 on Saturday. It marks the 50th meeting between the schools with Ship holding a 30-17-2 series lead. Edinboro Edinboro lost to California(Pa.) 34-16 on Saturday, marking the tenth straight loss against the Vulcans. Cody Harris threw for 312 yards, marking the tenth 300-yard game of his career and fifth in his last eight games. Harris ran for both of Edinboro’s touchdowns, but did not throw a touchdown pass. It snapped a string of 15 straight games with at least one touchdown pass. Edinboro finished with minus-12 yards rushing, marking the third-lowest total in school history. Ben Eisel caught 7 passes for 58 yards, becoming the 12 receiver with 100 career receptions (104) and moving into 14th place in career receiving yards with 1,268. Freshman linebacker Joel Fulton blocked a punt to account for a safety. Edinboro will host Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, October 4 in the annual Homecoming game. Gannon Gannon improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1949 with a 33-7 victory at Clarion last Saturday. The undefeated 1949 team is the only other squad in school history to win its first four games en route to a perfect 8-0 final record. Junior Brock Jones rushed for a career-high 213 yards, representing the seventh-highest single-game total in school history. Jones has rushed for 651 yards through the first four games after entering the campaign with 28 career-rushing yards. Senior Justin Caliste recorded his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game, hauling in 11 catches for 112 yards. Caliste already owns the school record for most 100-yard receiving games, before adding his eighth career performance at Clarion. Caliste's 11 receptions fell one shy of his own school single-game record that he has reached on two previous occasions. Gannon has defeated Clarion in back-to-back years on the Golden Eagles' home field during their Homecoming Weekend. Gannon has out-scored its first four opponents 141-42. The Golden Knights have won five consecutive games dating back to last season, equaling the longest win streak since winning the last four games of the 2009 season and the first two contests of the 2010 campaign. IUP IUP defeated Mercyhurst 41-7. Kutztown The Golden Bears (2-2, 2-1) set school-records for points scored and margin of victory in a 74-0 win over Cheyney. The previous record was 67 from 1991 against Bloomsburg that stood for 23 years. The 74-point victory broke a 65-year school-record of 58 from a 58-0 victory over Trenton State in 1949. Kutztown dominated the stat sheet with advantages in first downs (32-3), total yards (572-47) and yards-per-play (6.7-1.0). Terry Williams ran for four touchdowns and 180 yards, 166 in the second half. His four touchdowns were the most by a KU back since 2002. Chad Barton completed 20-of-25 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns. He did not throw an interception to improve his season's touchdown/interception ratio to a PSAC-leading 15/1. Barton leads the league in completions (190) and is second in yards (1,304). Anthony Kelly hauled in his PSAC-leading eighth touchdown of the season this week. Kutztown plays at Millersville this week. Lock Haven Despite another tremendous effort from the LHU defense, the Bald Eagles are yet to crack the win column in 2014. With Saturday’s loss at East Stroudsburg, Lock Haven falls to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in PSAC play. Once again the Bald Eagles had two interceptions, marking the 18th time in the last 20 games, LHU has forced a turnover. Preseason All-American George Christas was at it again today and for the second straight game led all players in tackles with 12 (6 solo, 1 TFL, 2 BrUP & 1 INT). He and Mike Williams now have 36 tackles apiece on the season, and their nine tackles per game ranks them top-10 in the league. Quarterback Caleb Walton passed for a season-high three TDs in the loss at ESU, one away from his career-high of four - set last season at ESU. Walton is averaging 226.8 passing yards per game, the eighth most in the PSAC. His No. 1 target is David Cook, who caught a TD pass for the third straight game. Millersville Kevin Wiggins caught his third touchdown of the season, giving true freshmen six of Millersville's eight touchdown catches. Matt Misley threw another touchdown, giving him nine on the season and one in each of the first four games. Evander Barkley totaled a career-high 46 yards rushing including a career-long run of 35 yards. The Marauders rushed for 145 yards, giving it 100-yard rushing efforts in eight of the last nine games dating back to last season. The defense recorded its sixth fumble recovery of the season, which is one more than it had in the entire 2013 season. Mercyhurst Mercyhurst remained winless in the 2014 season with a 41-7 loss at IUP on Saturday. Mercyhurst is now 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC West standings. The Lakers dropped to 2-5 lifetime against the Crimson Hawks, including four losses in a row against their western division rivals. Mercyhurst's start is the first time since 2005 that the Lakers have been winless through the first four games of the season. The 2005 squad started the year with six consecutive losses and finished the regular season with a 3-7 record. Senior free safety Colin Kimball had his second interception of the season in the fourth quarter. It was the tenth of his career, tying him for seventh on the school’s all-time list with Glenn Novak (1989-92). Novak is the father of freshman wide receiver Brad Novak, who is third on the team with eight catches this season. Mercyhurst was limited to 146 yards of total offense, its lowest output of the season, and the program's lowest total since getting 133 total yards against the Crimson Hawks in a 42-10 loss at IUP on October 18, 2008. The Lakers had just 29 yards on the ground, also the lowest total of the year. Mercyhurst returns home next Saturday, October 4, for its annual Homecoming weekend game against the Golden Eagles of Clarion. Kickoff from Tullio Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Seton Hill Seton Hill fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in PSAC play following a 63-19 loss at Slippery Rock. SHU is now 1-5 overall vs the Rock. SRU jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead. Drew Jackson threw for 349 yards and 3 TDs. Tyler Zimmer finished the contest with 14 tackles and 1 interception. SHU had 23 first downs to 29 for the Rock. SHU was out gained 583-389 including being outgained on the ground 261-30. SHU will host California (PA) next Saturday at 3 PM. Shippensburg SHIP was defeated 38-30 at Bloomsburg. Senior wide receiver Trevor Harman became the all-time career receptions leader. After 9 receptions Saturday he now enters Week 5 with 264 career receptions, 3,731 receiving yards and 55 touchdowns. Quarterback Chris Lawshe completed a career-high 33 passes out of 47 attempts for 347 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 40 yards and a touchdown but was sacked seven times. Junior Sheldon Mayer led all receivers with 12 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns. In his last two games against Bloomsburg, Mayer has totaled 18 catches for 404 yards and four touchdowns. Bloomsburg, a team that prides itself on the run, managed just 123 yards on 39 carries (3.2 yards per rush) against SHIP. Slippery Rock Slippery Rock took the opening kickoff 91 yards for a TD and cruised to a 63-19 Homecoming win over Seton Hill. Slippery Rock improves to 23-4 on Homecoming in games coached by George Mihalik. The Rock ran 91 plays, marking the third time this year SRU has run more than 90 offensive plays. Drew Scales' 91-yard kickoff return TD was the first return TD for SRU since his 82 yarder against Seton Hill in 2013. Zack Newsock threw for career-highs of 299 yards and four touchdowns. Shamar Greene ran for 128 yards, his lowest output of the season, and is on pace to run for more than 2,000 yards through four games averaging 186 yards per game. Melvin German led SRU in receiving yards for the second straight time with 114 yards and three TD on four catches. The SRU defense held Seton Hill to 30 rushing yards, marking the second time this season holding a team at 30 yards or less in rushing. The Rock is allowing just 57.0 yards per game on the ground and is running for 318.8 yards per game. The offense went for more than 500 yards for the 12th time in the last 16 games. West Chester Saturday was the 82nd meeting between West Chester and Millersville. The Golden Rams lead the all-time series, 65-17. It is the oldest rivalry on the books at West Chester, as well as the most-played rivalry. West Chester scored more than 60 points in a game for the first time this year and the first time since the Cheyney game last season. West Chester amassed over 600 yards of total offense against Millersville for the second consecutive year. The Golden Rams had 624 yards last season and 608 Saturday. RB Eddie Elliott rushed for a career-high 124 yards and two TDs. QB Sean McCartney only played the first half and threw for more than 300 yards and 3 TDs. He spread the ball around, finding seven different receivers. West Chester sacked the Millersville quarterback a season-high five times. Three different Golden Rams registered better than 100 all-purpose yards in the game (Elder – 179; Monk – 130; Elliott – 124) … PK/P Rich Bruno made eight extra points, two shy of the school record and the most since Shawn Leo made eight against Cheyney last fall. Three different wide receivers caught a TD pass (Mayer, Brown and Doty).
