PSAC Athletes of the Week - 10/4 Sunday, October 4, 2015 12:30 PM Week 5 Football: Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Jon Schnaars East Stroudsburg (Sr. / WR) Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin Schnaars had 20 catches, 218 yards, and 7 TDs in a 69-67 (5OT) loss vs Shippensburg. He set PSAC records for receptions (20) and TDs (7) in a single game. In regulation, had 17 catches, 201 yards and 4 TDs. He helped R-Sr QB Matt Soltes tie PSAC record with 9 TD passes (40-for-70, 594 yards, 616 total yards). Schnaars and Sr. WR Gerard Wendowski (10 catches, 222 yards, 2 TD) are 1st ESU teammates with 200+ yards in the same game. Football: Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Nydair Rouse West Chester (Fr. / DB) Philadelphia, Pa. / Simon Gratz Rouse led the Golden Rams with 7 tackles in Saturday's 33-9 win at Lock Haven. Rouse also led the team with a pair of pass breakups along with an interception that he returned for 21 yards. The WCU defense shutout the Bald Eagles in the second half and limited LHU to less than 300 yards of total offense on the day. Football: Eastern Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Brandon Monk West Chester (Sr. / RB/Return Specialist) West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove Monk returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, following a Lock Haven TD in the first quarter of Saturday's 33-9 win for West Chester. Monk accumulated 161 all-purpose yards thanks to his 96-yard return. It was Monk's second kickoff return for a TD in his college career. He entered this season as the school's all-time leader in average yards per return. Football: Western Division Offensive Athlete of the Week Chris Temple IUP (So. / RB) Malvern, Pa. / Great Valley Temple set a new school record with six rushing touchdowns (old record was five). He also tied John Kuhn for the PSAC single game record. His 234 rushing yards was career-high, eclipsing his previous career-high of 195 yards set against Kutztown this year. He had rushes of 67 (TD), 41, 28 and 22 (TD) yards. Currently, Temple leads PSAC with 146.7 rushing yards per game. He is fifth in the PSAC with 440 rushing yards, despite playing just two full games. Football: Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week Marcus Martin Slippery Rock (So. / DE) West Mifflin, Pa. / West Mifflin Martin was dominant in The Rock's 41-14 road win at PSAC West preseason favorite Gannon. He recorded a team-high 11 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble on a sack, fought through a holding call that was whistled and recovered a fumble on the same play to finish with 11 tackles, 2.5 sackes, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Martin now has 20.0 sacks in 17 career games and leads all active players in the NCAA, regardless of division, in sacks per game. Football: Western Division Special Teams Athlete of the Week Jesstin Hamm Gannon (Sr. / WR) Harwood, Md. / DeMatha Catholic Hamm returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown during the second quarter, giving Gannon a 14-6 lead with 4:50 left in the first half. It was the seventh-longest punt return in school history. Also, it was Gannon's first punt return for a touchdown since Justin Caliste took one 90 yards for a score September 28, 2013 at Clarion. It was Hamm’s first career punt or kickoff return for a touchdown. Field Hockey Athlete of the Week Megan McKay Slippery Rock (Jr. / F) Reading, Pa. / Governor Mifflin McKay recorded two three-goal performances last week for The Rock. McKay scored three straight goals in Slippery Rock's 6-0 win over Mansfield last Tuesday, as well as three goals in the 5-3 loss to No. 6 Kutztown Saturday. The junior's two hat-tricks last week moved her into second in the PSAC in scoring and into a tie for second in goals. Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Dylan Mountain Lock Haven (Sr.) Altoona, Pa. / Altoona Lock Haven’s Dylan Mountain led the No. 10 Bald Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the Paul Short Invitational. Mountain was the top PSAC and NCAA Division II finisher, taking ninth overall with a time of 24:14. Mountain finished ninth out of 1,261 total men’s collegiate runners on Friday. As a team, LHU was fourth out of 108 and by far the top Division II team in the field, losing only to Georgetown, ranked No. 14 in DI and Villanova, ranked No. 7 in DI, along with the University of Guelph (Canada). Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Meagen Carter Seton Hill (Sr.) Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Carter finished second overall in the 6K Brown Race at the Paul Short Invitational this weekend in a field of 387 runners. She ran the 6K course in a time of 21:26. Carter's time set the school record for the women's 6k. Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week Nick Izzo Bloomsburg (Sr. / MF) Frankford, Del. / Indian River Izzo scored the game winning goal in OT against Slippery Rock, helping the Huskies to a 3-2 win over the Rock in their only game of the week. Izzo also assisted on the game-tying score in the 79th minute, then scored the game winner with just over a minute left in the first OT. Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week Mani Brueckner Gannon (Sr. / MF) Valencia, Pa. / Mars Area Brueckner helped Gannon post a perfect 2-0 record last week, defeating Slippery Rock and Shippensburg by identical 2-1 scores. She scored the game-winning goal against Slippery Rock, bending in a corner kick from the left side in the 27th minute. It was her team-best third game-winning goal of the season and 13th of her career. She tied the Shippensburg match at 1-1 in the 72nd minute, scoring off a free kick from outside the box on the left side. Brueckner leads #4 Gannon this season in goals, assists, and points. Brooke May Kutztown (So. / MF) East Berlin, Pa. / Dover Area In two critical PSAC games, May helped lead the Golden Bears to a 2-0 record. Her goal in the 8th minute at IUP eventually helped give KU a 2-1 victory. On Saturday, she assisted on both goals for KU in a 2-0 victory at California. Her two assists came at 87:06 and 87:35 after both teams played nearly the entirety of regulation scoreless. She leads the PSAC in assists and assists per game. Men's Golfer of the Week Chris Kupniewski Mercyhurst Erie, Pa. / Collegiate Academy Behind the strength of a final round five-under par 67, Kupniewski won the individual crown at Gannon University's Bud Elwell Fall Classic on Monday afternoon at Whispering Woods Golf Course. Kupniewski's torrid final round also enabled the team to take home the team title, winning the event by a dozen strokes over second place St. Thomas Aquinas. His 67 was the lowest round of the tournament by three strokes. Women's Golfer of the Week: Cara Vanderham California Innisfail, Alberta / Innisfail Vanderham helped lead the Vulcans to a second-place finish at the Dan Salisbury Memorial, which also served as a preview for the NCAA Regional Championship course in Springfield, Illinois. She led the team and placed seventh overall with a 13-over par 157 (78-79), playing in a field of nearly 90 golfers. Cal U tied host Illinois-Springfield and Drury for second in the team standings (15 teams) with a 72-over 648 (322-326). Volleyball: Eastern Division Athlete of the Week Cambria Wierman Pitt-Johnstown (So. / OH) Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic Wierman led the way for the UPJ in two PSAC East sweeps. Against Millersville, she had eight kills and just one error, hitting .280 in the three set win. She had a team-high 13 kills against Shippensburg. She also had a pair of service aces in the match to go along with 10 digs. Volleyball: Western Division Athlete of the Week Challen Litwiler Edinboro (So. / OH) Harmonsburg, Pa. / Conneaut Area Litwiler helped Edinboro improve to 16-2 with three wins. That included a 3-1 win over Clarion, the preseason favorite in the PSAC West, followed by a 3-1 win over IUP, who came in at 11-3. She had 47 kills in the three matches (20 vs. Clarion) along with 49 digs (19 vs. Clarion).
