Five PSAC Athletes Garner All-America Status on Final Day of NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field

DAY THREE RECAP
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---
Five PSAC track and field athletes earned All-American recognition on the final day of the NCAA DII Track and Field Championships Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Millerville sophomore Sunflower Greene was the only PSAC athlete to grab All-America First-Team honors on Saturday after she finished seventh in the women’s shot put with a heave of 14.63 meters.
 
Shippensburg senior Sarah Hunt concluded an impressive college career with All-America Second-Team accolades in the women’s triple jump. The Raider leapt 12.18 meters and claimed ninth.
 
SU had a pair of juniors earn All-America Second-Team merits in the men’s shot put. Alec Rideout finished 10th with a distance of 17.31 meters while Bryan Pearson claimed 12th with a mark of 17.09 meters.
 
Kutztown junior McKenzie Fagan finished 16th in the women’s high jump with a height of 1.62 meters.
 
Tiffin won the team title on the men’s side with a 63-point effort while Ashland (52) and St. Augustine’s (46) were second and third, respectively.
 
Seton Hill was the lone PSAC school to earn points in the championship with two.
 
Adams State claimed the team title on the women’s side with 47 points. Grand Valley St. and Chadron finished with 39 and 38 points to finish second and third, respectively.
 
SU paced all PSAC schools and tied for 40th with four points while Millersville tied for 49th with two points.
 
The outdoor track and field season began as early as March 8 for some PSAC schools. Most schools open their season March 16.

DAY TWO RECAP
Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Seton Hill sophomore Pat O’Connor earned All-American accolades in the men’s high jump during day two of the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
 
O’Connor finished seventh in the event after clearing 2.07 meters. He cleared the height on his second attempt.
 
East Stroudburg’s Aspen Gaita finished 12th in the pentathlon after amassing 3530 points.
 
Slippery Rock had a pair of representatives in the women’s pole vault. Madeline Marshall led the way after finishing 13th when she cleared a height of 3.77 meters. Teammate Courtney McQuaide grabbed 16th after clearing 3.62 meters.
 
Grand Valley St., Adams State and Chadron are all tied for the team lead on the women’s side with 16 points. Shippensburg is tied for 24th with four.
 
Tiffin paces the men’s side with 32 points while Ashland is second with 24. SHU is tied for 28th with two points.
 
The final day commences at 2:30 p.m. with the women’s shot put. 


DAY ONE RECAP
Results
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Shippensburg senior Sarah Hunt garnered All-American status in the women’s long jump after earning fifth place on day one of the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
 
Hunt recorded a six-meter jump on her fourth attempt. All six of her jumps traveled 5.81 meters or farther.
 
California junior Julie Friend finished 15th in the women’s 5000-meter run with a time of 17:39.41.
 
Fellow Vulcan Summer Hill broke a school record in the women’s mile with a time of 4:50.71. She finished 10th in the preliminaries and earned Second-Team All-America recognition.
 
Slippery Rock senior Ryan Thompson turned in an impressive performance after earning Second-Team All-America accolades in the men’s mile run. Thompson completed the race in 4:14.50.
 
Action begins Friday at 12:05 p.m. with the women’s pentathlon 60-meter hurdles. East Stroudsburg’s Aspen Gaita is a participant in the event.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- 18 PSAC athletes have been selected to compete at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, the NCAA announced last week.

Of the 18 athletes, 10 are women and 8 are men. Shippensburg will send the most athletes in the PSAC with four while California and Slippery Rock will have three representatives.

A total of 540 participants, 270 men and 270 women, will compete in the championships. Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

The championships will be held March 9-11 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham CrossPlex, as part of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships Festival.
