HARRISBURG, Pa. --- Shippensburg University has claimed the honor as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s top program by winning the 2016-17 Dixon Trophy, the league announced Tuesday afternoon in Harrisburg, Pa.

It marks the league-high eighth time that the school has won the award and first time since the 2010-11 season.

This year marks the 22nd time the PSAC has recognized a Dixon Trophy recipient, given annually to the institution that accumulates the top score based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records. The trophy is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education.

The award is given to the program which generates the top average point value among each PSAC Championship sport it sponsors. Each sport champion earns 18 points - based on the league's membership total - and descending point values are awarded for respective placement.

SU bested IUP by a slim margin of .17 points after establishing an overall average of 12.82. IUP posted a 12.65 while West Chester (12.36), Bloomsburg (11.48) and East Stroudsburg (11.2) rounded-out the top five.

SU claimed both championships in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. The Raiders won the men’s basketball title in March.

IUP impressed with titles in men’s golf, women’s basketball and women’s tennis while WCU continued its impressive run with titles in men’s and women’s swimming and tacked on a title in softball.

Following SU’s eight Dixon Trophy awards, WCU, Bloomsburg and Lock Haven have three apiece, while California is a two-time winner.  Kutztown, Millersville and Slippery Rock have all won one Dixon Trophy.
