HARRISBURG, Pa. --- West Chester University has claimed the honor as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s top program by winning the 2017-18 Dixon Trophy, the league announced Tuesday afternoon in Harrisburg, Pa.

It marks the fourth time that the school has won the award and first time since the 2015-16.

This year marks the 23rd time the PSAC has recognized a Dixon Trophy recipient, given annually to the institution that accumulates the top score based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records. The trophy is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education.

The award is given to the program which generates the top average point value among each PSAC Championship sport it sponsors. Each sport champion earns 18 points - based on the league's membership total - and descending point values are awarded for respective placement.

WCU dominated on both sides of the coin all season after producing an overall average of 13.75. IUP (11.87) bested Shippensburg (11.83) by .04 points for second place.

East Stroudsburg won the men’s basketball tournament coupled with titles in men’s and women’s soccer to earn a fourth-place finish at 11.50 points.

Slippery Rock rounded out the top five with an average of 11.21 points.

WCU claimed team titles in women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming and field hockey. The Golden Rams appeared in the title game in football and softball while finishing second as a team in women’s golf.

The Golden Rams’ women produced an astonishing average of 15.88 points. IUP and SU tied for the top spot in the men’s average at 12.94.

IUP turned in a solid 2017-18 campaign with titles in men’s golf, football, women’s basketball and women’s tennis.

SU leads all universities with eight Dixon Trophy’s while WCU is second with four. Bloomsburg and Lock Haven have three apiece, while California is a two-time winner.  Kutztown, Millersville and Slippery Rock have all won one Dixon Trophy.
