MANSFIELD, Pa. --- Peggy Carl, a seasoned coach and administrator with over 30 years of experience, has been named the next Director of Athletics at Mansfield University.
"The Mansfield University Athletic program is poised and ready to achieve great things, and I am honored and humbled to have been selected to move Mountaineer Athletics into the future," said Carl. "I am committed to enhancing the experience for all Mountaineer student-athletes and staff and cannot wait to get started."
Carl comes to Mansfield from the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) where she was the Coordinator of Research and Special Projects. She previously served a six-month appointment as the Interim Director of Athletics at Earlham College in Ohio.
Prior to Earlham, Carl served as the Director of Athletics at Salem State University in Salem, Mass. from 2015 to 2018, directing a fifteen-sport Division III program. During her time at Salem State, the Vikings showed a steady improvement in the Smith Cup standings, earned the program's first NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and hosted the MASCAC championships for men's ice hockey, men's basketball, and baseball. Student-athletes from Salem State enjoyed retention and graduation rates far exceeding the general student population.
From 2008 to 2014, Carl was the Director of Athletics at Beloit College in Wisconsin. While guiding the renovation of the Strong Stadium complex in Beloit, she also increased the athletics program with the addition of men's and women's lacrosse.
Carl served as the head men's and women's swimming coach at Occidental College in Los Angeles from 1990 to 2008 and also worked in a number of administrative capacities. She was Occidental's Interim Director of Athletics during the 1999-2000 academic year and was named the Tigers' Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator.
Her eighteen years as Occidental's swim coach produced one of the most successful swimming and diving programs in southern California. Carl coached Tiger swimmers and divers to numerous All-Conference and All-America honors, and mentored Jon Dohring to the one-meter and three-meter individual diving titles at the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Well-known nationally in the world of swimming and diving, Carl has served on numerous NCAA committees and has helped to organize and facilitate scores of National Championships. From 2002 to 2004, she served as chair of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships Committee.
In 1996, Carl was selected to be the logistics coordinator for the swimming competition at the Atlanta Olympic Games. In this capacity, she managed a crew of 20 and interfaced directly with USA Swimming officials as well as President Clinton's Secret Service detail. Following her success in Atlanta, Ms. Carl was later selected to be the Field of Play Manager for the 2008 Olympic Swimming Team Trials in Long Beach, Calif. In that role, she provided oversight and management to every aspect of the daily operations, from security to logistics to the army of volunteers necessary to ensure a high level of success. Additionally, she has served as championships coordinator for numerous conference and NCAA National Championship meets.
Carl earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Whittier College in Los Angeles, where she was a SCIAC champion swimmer. She later earned an M.A. in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A. from the University of California, Irvine.
"I am looking forward to this new professional challenge and to working with the wonderful staff at Mansfield University," Carl stated. "I want to thank search chair,
Dr. Robert Maris, the search committee, V.P. Crossin, and President Fackler for providing me this amazing opportunity."
