PSAC Athletes of the Week - 11/11 Monday, November 11, 2019 10:30 AM MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK Brent Benedict Gannon (Sr. / Backstroke/Middle Distance/Butterfly) Corry, Pa. / Corry Benedict turned in six event wins to lead the Golden Knights in a tri-meet with Edinboro and Allegheny. The senior won the 50-yard freestyle with at time of 21.09, and the 100 individual medley with a time of 53.13. Benedict also was a member of every relay team that swept all four relay events, and turned in PSAC qualifying times in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK Madisson Cartmill Millersville (Sr. / Backstroke) Las Vegas, Nevada / West Career and Technical Cartmill saw first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley. Cartmill touched the wall with a season-best time of 1:01.15 in the 100 back, marking her fifth PSAC cut of the season. She posted a 56.51 in the 100 free, two seconds ahead of Kutztown's Emmarose Decaro. Cartmill cleared the PSAC qualifying time in the 400 IM by nine seconds, completing the race in 4:51.06. The time marked a new career-best for the senior. VOLLEYBALL CENTRAL DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Rachel Cain East Stroudsburg (Fr. / S) Garnet Valley, Pa. / Garnet Valley Cain averaged 11.29 assists per set on the week as the Warriors went 1-1. She tallied 42 assists on Friday against Millersville and 37 on Saturday in a 3-0 sweep against Millersville. She also tallied four service aces on the week. On the season, she is averaging 9.53 assists per set for the Warriors. VOLLEYBALL SOUTHEAST DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jayci Suseland Millersville (Sr. / OH) Schoolcraft, Mich. / Schoolcraft Suseland led Millersville to a road victory over East Stroudsburg and a road win over Kutztown, clinching the Marauders a playoff spot and putting them at 22 wins for the season--the most for the program since 1997. Suseland was extremely efficient, totaling 35 kills to just five errors on the weekend. She totaled 20 and a .400 hitting percentage at ESU. She added three block assists. Against Kutztown, she recorded 15 kills on 25 swings and added three more block assists. VOLLEYBALL NORTHWEST DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Ashley Beyers Gannon (Jr. / S) Lanark, Ill. / Eastland Beyers helped the Lady Knights extend their win streak to nine matches and clinch a spot in the PSAC Tournament. Beyers distributed a team-high 108 assists (12.0/s) with 34 digs (3.78/s) last week. She also contributed seven blocks, seven kills and one service ace. Her week was highlighted by back-to-back double-double performances at Pitt-Johnstown (39 assists, 11 digs) and IUP (36 assists, 17 digs). The Lanark, Ill. native has reached the 30 assist plateau in her last 16 matches and currently ranks second in the PSAC with 10.99 assists per set. VOLLEYBALL SOUTHWEST DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jillian Livorse Seton Hill (Sr. / OH) Willoughby, Ohio / Willoughby South Livorse led the Griffins to a pair of PSAC wins which clinched the PSAC SW Division for the Griffins. She hit .273 on the weekend with 32 kills, including tying a career high with 19 vs Slippery Rock on Friday. Jill also added 19 digs, 4 aces and 4 blocks on the weekend. VOLLEYBALL DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jensen Silbaugh Cal U (Jr. / L) Warren, Ohio / Lakeview Silbaugh led the defensive effort with 5.29 digs per set, as the Vulcans registered a 1-1 record in PSAC Crossover action over the weekend. She paced the team with 20 digs and added three blocks, three kills and two aces against Clarion on Friday night. Silbaugh did not serve as the libero for the first time this season in the initial two sets of the match against the Golden Eagles. The Ohio native then tied for the team lead with 17 digs and two aces in a 3-0 sweep versus Slippery Rock on Saturday. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Ariel Jones Shippensburg (Jr. / G) Lebanon, Pa. / Cedar Crest Jones scored 57 points in the tournament, 26 more than any other player. She shot 63 percent from the field (17-of-27), 77 percent from the free-throw line (17-of-22). Against Wheeling, Jones had a game-high 32 points. Jones scored 20 of her 32 points in the first half in achieving the fifteenth 30-point game of her career. She was an efficient 11-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Jones also had four assists and two rebounds. Against Frostburg, Jones scored 25 points and made 11-of-14 at the free-throw line. She scored 18 of those 25 points in the fourth quarter, equaling Frostburg State's team output over the final 10 minutes. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jordan Hertz East Stroudsburg (Sr. / G) Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg Hertz opened the 2019-20 season over the weekend by recording five blocks and tallying three steals as the Warriors went 1-1. She recorded four blocks and one steal in a win for East Stroudsburg against Frostburg State on Friday. Hertz added a pair of steals and one block on Saturday against Wheeling. The reigning PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year also pulled down 10 boards on the week. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Alli McGrath Pitt-Johnstown (Sr. / G/F) South Park, Pa. / South Park McGrath led Pitt-Johnstown to a pair of wins. She scored a game-high 20 points and had 11 rebounds, 9-11 FTs, two assists and a steal in 72-68 season-opening win over Virginia State Friday. The senior followed up with 30 points (11-16 FG, 6-10 3FGs), game-high nine rebounds with two assists and two steals in 86-85 comback win over Fayetteville State. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Courtney Cecere Seton Hill (Jr. / G) Windber, Pa. / Forest Hills Cecere helped the Griffins get off to a 2-0 start in the PSAC/MEC Challenge. She had five steals and a block over the weekend while adding 18 points and nine rebounds. She held Fairmont's top scorer to 18 points after scoring 39 the previous night. Cecere accumulated nine defensive rebounds. MEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Malik Jackson West Chester (Sr. / G) Lansdowne, Pa. / Penn Wood Jackson averaged 22.5 points on 50-percent shooting from the floor, making 8-of-15 shots from three-point range in two West Chester wins. He also posted 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game and shot 86.7 percent on 15 free throw attempts. He played 26.5 minutes on average and had two steals total in the two contests. MEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK James Sullivan Millersville (Jr. / G) Grottoes, Va. / Spotswood Sullivan totaled seven steals in the Marauders opening weekend, playing against two teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. In a one-point loss in a true road game at Fairmont State, Sullivan recorded six steals. The next day against Notre Dame College, he had a steal and blocked a shot. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds from his guard position. MEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Will Robinson Jr. Slippery Rock (Sr. / F) Baltimore, Md. / Digital Harbor Robinson Jr. had a dominating start to the 2019-20 season last weekend with a pair of marquee performances at the Joe Retton Classic. In two games, Robinson Jr. averaged 31.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game while shooting 66.7 percent from the field.. His points and rebound totals lead the PSAC while his field goal percentage ranks fourth among athletes with at least 10 attempts. Robinson Jr. opened his Rock career with a 25-point, 17-rebound, one-assist showing in Slippery Rock’s 78-76 win against Notre Dame College. He then went for 38 points and 12 rebounds in a close loss at Fairmont State. His 38-point game is tied for the most points scored in a single-game by a Rock athlete since 2002. MEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK John Paul Kromka Pitt-Johnstown (So. / F) Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway Kromka averaged 5.0 defensive rebounds per contest while blocking seven shots in two contests. He recorded a steal in a win against West Virginia Wesleyan. WRESTLER OF THE WEEK Chris Eddins Pitt-Johnstown (Sr.) Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Salem Eddins posted 3-0 record at Saturday's Northeast Duals, including 3-2 win over St. Cloud State's No. 2 ranked James Pleski. The senior won by technical fall in matches against Ithaca and American International. He defeated Division I #12-ranked Joshua Maruca (Arizona State), 6-2. MEN'S SOCCER EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Marcus Torgersson East Stroudsburg (Sr. / MF) Gothenburg, Sweden / Aspero Torgersson scored the game-winning goal in East Stroudsburg's 1-0 overtime victory at Millersvillle on Wednesday. Bradley Turocy sent a header to Torgersson on the left side of the box, and he beat goalie Darian McCauley for the game-winner just 1:34 into overtime. On Saturday, Torgersson helped the Warriors clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament as the Warriors registered a 4-0 win over Shepherd. The senior racked up three assists in the match, including two on goals by Oliver Lundberg. MEN'S SOCCER EASTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Evan Miele East Stroudsburg (So. / GK) Randolph, N.J. / Randolph Miele didn't allow a goal in over 141 minutes of action in net for the Warriors in wins over Millersville and Shepherd. The Randolph, N.J. native posted a shutout with two saves in Wednesday's 1-0 overtime triumph at Millersville. He then recorded a combined shutout with backup goalie Riley Lougee on Saturday to help clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament for East Stroudsburg. MEN'S SOCCER WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Sergio Del Castillo Gannon (Fr. / F) Madrid, Spain Castillo scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime at Mercyhurst. He tallied an assist on the match-winner which clinched Gannon's first PSAC regular season West title. Castillo continued that momentum into their regular season finale against Slippery Rock with a goal just 1:08 into the match. He recorded his second goal in the 17th minute and tallied an assist on Gannon's third goal. Castillo has now scored in two straight matches and assisted in four straight matches. MEN'S SOCCER WESTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Alfredo Gallo Mercyhurst (Sr. / GK) Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster Gallo made two saves in the Lakers 4-0 win over Cal U for his first shutout as a Laker. WOMEN'S SOCCER EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Izzy Weigel Shippensburg (Sr. / F) Chambersburg, Pa. / Bridgewater Weigel produced single-game career highs of four goals and two assists in a 7-0 win over Mansfield. Weigel's banner day snapped a pair of long Raider streaks. No Raider had scored a hat trick in 12 years, since Gayle Kuntzmann achieved the feat at Clarion on Oct. 26, 2007. Likewise, it has been more than 16 years since an Shippensburg player finished with four or more goals in a game, which Weigel did on Wednesday. Weigel finished just one shy of the single-game record for both goals and points. Karen Jennings had five goals and 11 points in a 1997 win over Juniata. Overall for 2019, Weigel finishes with single-season career highs of 11 goals, six assists and 28 points. WOMEN'S SOCCER EASTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jenna Hawkins Bloomsburg (Jr. / GK) Fleetwood, Pa. / Fleetwood Hawkins had, arguably, the best week of her collegiate career between the pipes for the Bloomsburg women's soccer team as she posted two more shutouts which helped the Huskies to the PSAC East regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming tournament. Hawkins went 1-0-1, did not allow a goal in 200 minutes, and totaled 13 saves in a 0-0 tie at West Chester on Wednesday and a 2-0 win over Millersville on Saturday which clinched the top seed. The eight saves at West Chester were a season-high for Hawkins and her highest single-game total since recording nine in a 2-2 tie against Kutztown on October 25, 2017. She then added five saves on Saturday in the win over the Marauders. She has not allowed a goal in the last 577:50 and is 16-1-1 with a 0.28 goals against average and 11 shutouts this season. Her 11 shutouts increased her school-record to 30 for her career - just five shy of tying the PSAC record. WOMEN'S SOCCER WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Alyssa Otto Mercyhurst (Fr. / F) Bridgeport, Ohio / St. Clairsville Otto scored three goals and added an assist in the 5-0 win over IUP. She then added one goal and one assist in the 4-1 win over Cal U. WOMEN'S SOCCER WESTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Emma Yoder Slippery Rock (So. / GK) Marietta, Ga. / Forest Hills Central Yoder helped lead Slippery Rock to a 1-0-0 record last week in a 4-0 shutout home victory for Slippery Rock over Gannon to close out the 2019 regular season. Yoder finished the week with six saves and her seventh shutout of the season. In 2019, Yoder has a .827 save percentage along with a 0.77 goals against average and 67 saves. Among conference goalkeepers, the sophomore ranks fourth in goals allowed (14) and tied for fourth in shutouts while ranking seventh in save percentage. FOOTBALL EASTERN DIVISION OFFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Deonte Glover Shepherd (Gr. / RB) Inwood, W. Va. / Musselman Glover had 19 carries for 135 yards and five touchdowns in Shepherd's 42-35 win over Bloomsburg. Glover's five rushing touchdowns tie a Shepherd single-game mark. Glover scored the game-winning touchdown with a 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. FOOTBALL EASTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Tim Bradley Shippensburg (Jr. / DE) Garnet Valley, Pa. / Garnet Valley Bradley had a monster game for Shippensburg in a 35-10 win, recording a career-high three sacks in the second half out of four total tackles-for-loss (TFLs). His final sack was a sack-fumble recovered by redshirt-freshman Aaron Alphee and returned for 28 yards. East Stroudsburg lost 36 yards from Bradley's TFLs, including 32 yards from the sacks. FOOTBALL EASTERN DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Andrew Chegia West Chester (Jr. / PK) Kennett Square, Pa. / Unionville Chegia made all of the eight extra points on Saturday during their game against Lock Haven. Chegia is 7-8 on field goals attempted and field goals made, leading the team. FOOTBALL WESTERN DIVISION OFFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Roland Rivers III Slippery Rock (Sr. / QB) Ellenwood, Ga. / Martin Luther King Rivers III was nearly perfect in leading a dominant showing from No. 9 Slippery Rock in a 56-7 win at Gannon. He completed 20-of-26 passes (77%) for 293 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and finished his day with 308 total yards of offense in less than three quarters of work. Rivers also set the Slippery Rock single-season and career TD passing records with 36 TD passes in 10 games this year and 64 TD passes in just 22 games at The Rock. Slippery Rock improved to 10-0 for the first time in program history and became the first team since 2009 to go 7-0 in PSAC West play in back-to-back years. FOOTBALL WESTERN DIVISION OFFENSIVE CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Garrett Owens Mercyhurst (Jr. / RB) North East, Pa. / North East Owens turned in his third three-touchdown performance on the season. His 98 yard touchdown run is the longest in Mercyhurst history and tied for second longest in PSAC history. Mercyhurst improved to 3-0 on the year when he reaches 100 yards rushing. FOOTBALL WESTERN DIVISION DEFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Nazir Streater IUP (Jr. / CB) Palmyra, N.J. / Camden Catholic Streater picked off two passes and broke up three more to lead an IUP defensive effort that limited Edinboro to 158 passing yards and six points in Saturday's win. Streater also finished with nine tackles and made a difference in the return game with 92 kickoff return yards on just three returns. Streater's two picks each came in the third quarter as IUP held Edinboro to 57 total yards on 18 plays. One of his three pass breakups also came in the third quarter. Streater now leads the PSAC in both interceptions (five) and passes defensed (14) FOOTBALL WESTERN DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jake Chapla Slippery Rock (Sr. / PK) Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum Chapla broke the all-time PSAC record for scoring by a kicker with six PAT kicks in a 56-7 win at Gannon, bringing his career scoring total to 362 points and topping the former PSAC record of 361 points that was set in 2013 by Bloomsburg.
