Gosselin, Lee Yaw Earn PSAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Year Honors
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has released its men’s soccer all-conference teams, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
All-conference and major award winners are determined by a vote the league’s head coaches.
In the East, Millersville senior Jake Gosselin was voted Athlete of the Year. It marks the seventh time a Marauder has garnered the award and first since 2015 (Jamie Vazquez). The senior is tied for second in the league in goals (11) while being for tied for fourth in assists (6). He is fourth in points (28). From Sep. 14 to Sep. 28, Gosselin scored a goal in each of Millersville’s contests; which was over a span of five matches. Gosselin paved the way for a Marauders victory against Lock Haven (Oct. 16) after scoring a goal and dishing out a pair of assists. On four occasions, Gosselin tallied a goal and an assist in the same contest.
West Chester sophomore Craig Potts was tabbed Defensive Athlete of the Year. He is the third Golden Ram to accomplish the feat. West Chester’s Kyle Hoops garnered the accolade in 2018. Behind the strong play of Potts, the Golden Rams have allowed only 14 goals on the season; which is the second fewest in the PSAC. The sophomore turned in an assist in West Chester’s 1-0 win against East Stroudsburg (Sep. 17). Potts and the Golden Rams have shutout three of their last four opponents, including a 2-0 win against East Stroudsburg in a PSAC Quarterfinal.
Lock Haven’s Andrea DiSomma was named Freshman of the Year. He is the eight Bald Eagle to win the award and first since 2012 (Jacob Oldaker). DiSomma’s rookie campaign has been impressive while he leads the league in goals (17) and points (36). He averaged 2.0 points per contest. He turned in six multi-goal matches, including three hat tricks. DiSomma turned in five goals in two matches against Shippensburg. He recorded hat tricks against New York Tech (Oct. 1), Shepherd (Oct. 9) and Shippensburg (Oct. 19).
Millersville’s Steve Widdowson was named Coach of the Year. It is the fourth time in his career that he has claimed the award and first since 2015. The Marauders won the Eastern Division and earned a first-round bye and will play in a semifinal in the PSAC Championship on Friday. Millersville received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) Poll. Under his direction, six Marauders were named all-conference this season.
In the West, Gannon swept all four major awards and is the first school to accomplish the feat in the sport since 2004 (Lock Haven).
Gannon junior Alex Lee Yaw was voted Athlete of the Year. He is the fourth Golden Knight to win the award and it marks the second consecutive year that Gannon has boasted the winner (Sam Thornton). Lee Yaw sits in the top three in most major statistical categories. He sits second in points (30) and is tied for match-winning goals (4). He scored a goal in eight contests, including a hat trick against Bloomsburg (Oct. 2). He had three assists in a 5-1 win against Pitt-Johnstown (Oct. 12).
Gannon sophomore Chandler Hallwood claimed the Defensive Athlete of the Year merit. He is the first Golden Knight to win the award. Hallwood has been stout at the goalie position while allowing a league-low 11 goals. He is second with shutouts and has stonewalled 52 shots this year. Hallwood boasts the best save percentage (.814) in the PSAC.
Gannon’s Sergio Del Castillo was voted as the Freshman of the Year. He is the third Golden Knight to earn the accolade and first since 2011 (Robbie Bennett). Del Castillo sits fifth in points (22) and tied for fourth in assists (6). He has scored a goal in four of the last six Gannon matches, including two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win against Slippery Rock on the last day of the regular season. The freshman tallied Gannon’s lone goal in a 1-0 win against Urbana (Sep. 7).
Gannon’s Billy Colton was selected as Coach of the Year. It is the first time that Gannon has boasted the winner. The Golden Knights were ranked No. 5 in the latest USC Poll. Gannon won the Western Division and earned a first-round bye and will appear in a PSAC Semifinal. Gannon leads the league in goals score (56) while allowing the fewest in the conference (11). Under Colton’s direction, seven athletes were named to an all-conference team.
Four athletes are appearing on their third all-conference team.
