PSAC Athletes of the Week - 2/25 Monday, February 25, 2019 2:30 PM BASEBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Joey Coyle West Chester (Sr. / OF) Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum Coyle had a great start to the season over the weekend, as he went 7-for-11 (.636) with one home run, one double, two RBIs, and five runs scored to help West Chester open the season with a perfect 3-0 record. In game one on Friday afternoon, Coyle went 4-for-5 and was a major catalyst in the Golden Rams' offense that managed to keep coming back from deficits late to secure an exciting 6-5 extra-inning victory. In game two against St. Rose, Coyle went 2-for-2 with one RBI, one run scored, a home run, and a walk in the Golden Rams 3-0 victory over their guests. Coyle ended his week with another 1-for-4 performance while also scoring a pair of runs, driving in one run, and working a walk to help propel the Golden Rams to convincing 18-0 victory over the Rams of Jefferson. Coyle’s .636 batting average and seven hits to start the year are both tops on the team after three games, and he is currently tied for first on the squad with 11 total bases. Coyle paces the Golden Rams with two steals (on two attempts) and his five total bases are No. 2 on the squad overall. Coyle's .692 on-base percentage is the highest of any Golden Ram starter through opening weekend and he is one of just two individuals on WCU's roster to notch a home run. BASEBALL EASTERN DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK Jared Marshman Bloomsburg (Fr. / P/OF) Berwick, Pa. / Berwick Marshman, pitching in his first collegiate game on Saturday, came on in relief of starter Nick Stoner and went 4.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first collegiate save in the Huskies' 11-3 victory. Marshman did not allow a run or a hit in his outing against the University of the Sciences. He walked one and struck out eight as he combined with Stoner on a one-hitter. BASEBALL WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Joe Campagna Slippery Rock (Sr. / IF) Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk Campagna opened his 2019 season with a terrific series against Shippensburg. Over three games, Campagna hit .545 (6-for-11) with two runs scored, five RBI, and a .818 slugging percentage. Three of his six hits were doubles. The highlight of Campagna’s week was a game-winning RBI-double in the eighth inning of The Rock’s 1-0 extra-inning victory against the Raiders in the series’ second contest. BASEBALL WESTERN DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK Tanner Stanz Slippery Rock (Sr. / P) Warren, Pa. / Warren Stanz provided The Rock with the best outing of his collegiate career to open the 2019 season against Shippensburg. Stanz held the Raiders scoreless over six innings of work while striking out a career-high seven batters and scattering three hits and a pair of walks. Although Stanz received a no-decision in the contest, The Rock did go on to earn a 1-0 extra-inning victory that would have not been possible without his strong start. MEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Josh Williams East Stroudsburg (Sr. / F) Trenton, N.J. / Notre Dame Williams averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game during a 2-0 week for ESU vs. PSAC East opposition. The senior recorded his team-leading 12th double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds in a 97-84 home win over Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Williams added 22 points (8-11 FG) and nine rebounds in a 94-77 victory at PSAC East-leading West Chester, as the Warriors snapped a 15-game winning streak for the Golden Rams while handing them their first loss since Dec. 18. He scored a team-high 11 points during a second-half which saw ESU outscore WCU by a 53-37 margin to break open what had been a 41-40 contest. The win extends the Warriors' own win streak to seven games, and it moves them within a half-game of the Golden Rams for first place in the East. Williams had five blocks on the week, moving him up to third overall in the PSAC this season at 1.6 blocks per game. MEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Jaden Faulkner Millersville (Fr. / G) Glen Dale, Md. / Eleanor Roosevelt Millersville clinched the No. 4 seed with a double-overtime win against Kutztown and played an overtime game against Lock Haven less than 48 hours later. Faulkner played all 50 minutes against Kutztown and played 44 of 45 against Lock Haven. Against Kutztown, scored 35 points on 13-of-23 shooting, added eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks. It was the most points on record by a Millersville freshman. He followed that up with a double-double of 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds as well as two steals and a career-high three blocks against Lock Haven. MEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Jacobo Diaz IUP (Sr. / F) Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain / CBA Gran Canaria Diaz averaged 18.0 points and 11.5 rebounds and shot 62.5 percent from the floor in helping the second-ranked Crimson Hawks to a 2-0 week with wins over Clarion and Cal >> He had his 11th 20-point game of the season in the win over Clarion on 8-12 shooting. He followed that up with 16 points and season-highs of 14 rebounds and five assists in the win at Clarion. It was his 14th double-double of the season. Diaz grabbed eight offensive rebounds at Cal, helping IUP score 19 second chance points. He came up with clutch plays down the stretch in a tight game, making both free throws to give IUP a 59-55 lead with 1:29 left and then raced down the court to make a block on a layup seconds later. That block turned into another bucket for IUP and a six point lead with a minute to play. MEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Josh Wise Pitt-Johnstown (Jr. / G) Washington, Pa. / Washington Wise scored a team-high 23 points on 11-22 shooting with six rebounds, two steals and an assist in a 71-68 loss at Seton Hill on Thursday. The junior scored a game-high 30 pts (10-14 FGs, 4-5 3FG, 6-7 FT) with a pair of assists and steals in a 98-84 win in Sports Center over Slippery Rock on Saturday. MEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Zyan Collins California (Fr. / G) South Riding, Va. / Freedom Collins averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, as the Vulcans played two divisional opponents last week. He finished with 18 points on 7-of-19 shooting and added four rebounds while playing 39 minutes at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night. The Virginia native then scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-18 attempts, including four-of-seven from beyond the arc versus No. 2 IUP on Saturday. He also tallied eight rebounds and two assists in 40 minutes of action against the Crimson Hawks. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Tiffany Lapotsky East Stroudsburg (Jr. / G) Ashland, Pa. / North Schuylkill Lapotsky averaged 22.5 points per game for the Warriors in a pair of wins against Bloomsburg and West Chester. She shot 58.6 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from 3-point range while going 7-for-10 from the free-throw line against West Chester. Lapotsky scored 20 points in a win at home against the Huskies and dropped 25 points in a huge win at West Chester. She has scored double-digits in 18 consecutive games for ESU. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL EASTERN DIVISION FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Lauren Mills Shippensburg (Fr. / G/F) Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic In a 10-point road win at Mansfield, Mills scored a career-high 18 points; she made her first seven field-goal attempts of the game and was 4-of-5 at the free-throw line. Mills had nine points in each half and added four rebounds. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Michaela Barnes Edinboro (Jr. / G) Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston Barnes recorded her first career double-double, helping Edinboro to a 2-0 record last week. On Saturday, she had a career day on the glass vs. Clarion. The junior collected 10 rebounds, while also passing out a career-best eight assists. Last Wednesday, Barnes helped the Fighting Scots to a road win at Slippery Rock. In the two contests, she scored 24 points apiece over 37 minutes. She shot a combined 17-of-31 from the field and 14-of-16 at the line. In the contest against the Rock, she passed head coach Callie Wheeler for career free throws made (285). The junior ranks fourth in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 20.8 ppg. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION CO-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Lexi Griggs IUP (Jr. / F) Pittsburgh, Pa. / Vincentian Academy Griggs averaged 26.0 points and shot 83.3 percent from the field as the third-ranked Crimson Hawks split a pair of games last week. Griggs hit her career-high in points twice during the week, putting up 24 points on 12-16 shooting in the win over Clarion before scoring 28 points on 13-14 shooting at Cal. Her 92.9 field goal percentage at Cal is one of the best shooting performances in school history and the best since Ashley Stoner went 11-11 against Seton Hill in 2014. Her 13 field goals made is also one of the best single game marks in IUP history and just 3 short of the record of 16. Griggs also contributed with five rebounds, three blocks and two steals in the road loss to the Vulcans. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WESTERN DIVISION FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Tori Obenrader Gannon (Fr. / G/F) Fryburg, Pa. / North Clarion Obenrader chipped in eight points and eight rebounds, helping Gannon to a 62-60 win in lone game of the week against Mercyhurst (2/23/19). She dished out three assists. The freshman was an efficient 3-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line on Saturday.
