PSAC Baseball Athletes of the Week - 10 Monday, April 29, 2019 2:30 PM BASEBALL EASTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Ryan Shiffer Bloomsburg (Sr. / IF) Toms River, N.J. / Toms River South Shiffer batted .545 (12-of-22) with five doubles, three home runs, and 12 runs batted in during a 5-1 week for the Huskies. He had at least two hits in five of the six games and finished with a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.182 slugging percentage. At Mansfield on Monday, Shiffer hit a home run in each game and went 3-for-6 (.500) with three runs scored and five RBI in a Bloomsburg sweep. In a non-conference doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Wednesday, Shiffer went 4-of-9 (.444) with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI. Then, at Lock Haven on Saturday, he helped the Huskies to a sweep of the Bald Eagles by going 5-of-7 (.714) with two doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in. He belted a grand slam home run in game one - part of a seven-run inning - which led to a career-high five RBI in the opener. Shiffer is in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak which has seen him go 22-of-39 (.564) at the plate with four home runs and 17 RBI. BASEBALL EASTERN DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK Ashton Raines Bloomsburg (Sr. / P) Wallingford, Pa. / Strath Haven Raines pitched his second consecutive shutout - a one-hitter in the opening game of a doubleheader at Lock Haven on Saturday - and became the school's all-time leader in career strikeouts in his only start of the week. Raines was masterful on Saturday as he allowed only a leadoff single to Max Joseph in the second inning to improve to 6-1 on the season. He walked three and struck out six, throwing 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes. It was his second consecutive shutout as he lowered his season ERA to 2.19. He closed out the shutout in style, striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh with his punchout of Pedro Peguero to lead off the frame making him the program's new strikeout king. It was the 183rd strikeout of his career, breaking the previous record of 182 by Sean Holden from 1997-99. BASEBALL WESTERN DIVISION ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Ian Hess Gannon (Fr. / IF) Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan Hess posted back-to-back three hit games against Cal U (4/27/19). He lifted the Golden Knights to a 9-7 win with a two-run walk-off homer in game two on Saturday. Hess finished the week with nine RBI in four games. He walked twice and scored four runs in the four game series. Hess pushed his batting average this season from .286 to .312 with the four-game series. The three-hit games were the first of his collegiate career. BASEBALL WESTERN DIVISION PITCHER OF THE WEEK Tyler Garbee Mercyhurst (Sr. / P) Sewickley, Pa. / Quaker Valley Garbee tossed a no-hitter versus Slippery Rock on Monday. The senior followed it up with another win against Clarion, allowing one run on six hits. He totaled 23 Ks over the two starts.
