West Chester Wins Second Consecutive Dixon Trophy

HARRISBURG, Pa. --- West Chester University has claimed the honor as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s top program by winning the 2018-19 Dixon Trophy, the league announced Tuesday afternoon in Harrisburg, Pa.

It marks the fifth time that the institution has won the award and second consecutive year.

This year marks the 24th time the PSAC has recognized a Dixon Trophy recipient, given annually to the institution that accumulates the top score based on results of conference playoffs and/or regular-season records. The trophy is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., former chairman of the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education.

The award is given to the program which generates the top average point value among each PSAC Championship sport it sponsors. Each sport champion earns 18 points - based on the league's membership total - and descending point values are awarded for respective placement.    

West Chester bested all competition throughout the 2018-19 campaign after producing an overall average of 13.48. Shippensburg finished second with an average of 11.25 while Kutztown claimed third with 11.15.

West Chester won a league-high seven championships over the course of the year.  The Golden Rams programs swept the golf and swimming championships while also claiming the football, field hockey and women's lacrosse titles.

East Stroudsburg finished fourth with an average of 10.58 while Slippery Rock rounded-out the top five at 10.47.

West Chester’s women led the league with a 14.25 average while the men paced the league at 12.55. IUP posted the second-best mark on the men’s side with an 11.38.

Shippensburg leads all universities with eight Dixon Trophy’s. Bloomsburg and Lock Haven have three apiece, while Cal U is a two-time winner.  Kutztown, Millersville and Slippery Rock have all won one Dixon Trophy.
