PSAC Announces 2018-19 Top Team GPA Awards
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- Five different Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference institutions have claimed Top Team GPA Awards for the 2018-19 academic year, announced PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray Thursday afternoon.
Now in their eighth year of existence, the awards are issued across 21 sports.
The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the PSAC. The league hosts 23 championships, however, for the award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.
For the second consecutive year, Gannon paced the league while seven teams boasted league-high GPA’s. For the third straight year, the Golden Knight’s men’s cross country team led the PSAC. Additionally, Gannon laid claim in the sports of women’s cross country, men’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and volleyball.
Seton Hill boasted the top GPA in baseball and women’s track and field for the second consecutive year. The Griffins notched league-high GPA’s in women’s golf, women’s lacrosse, women’s basketball and men’s track and field.
Mercyhurst represented four teams on the list with football, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and wrestling. It marked the third consecutive year that the Lakers women’s tennis team led the PSAC in the category.
Slippery Rock’s field hockey team continued its success while boasting the sports’ top GPA for the eighth consecutive year. The Rock laid claim to the top GPA in women’s soccer and men’s soccer.
Pitt-Johnstown paced the league in men’s basketball.
For the second straight year, Mercyhurst’s women’s tennis team sported the league’s highest cumulative GPA. Eight teams are repeat winners from 2017-18. Gannon’s men’s cross country and Slippery Rock’s field hockey teams have won the Top Team GPA Award in all eight years of its existence.
