West Chester's O'Mara Named PSAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Year; 2019-20 All-Conference Teams Announced
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- West Chester senior Meghan O’Mara was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Golf Athlete of the Year, the league announced Tuesday afternoon in conjunction with the release of the women’s golf all-conference teams.
All-conference teams and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
O’Mara is the first West Chester athlete to garner the award and is the second West Chester representative to win any major award in the sport. The senior was nearly unstoppable during the fall season while she claimed six individual titles in 12 rounds of action. The Golden Ram won the PSAC individual title by nine strokes and was the only athlete to shoot sub-80 in all three rounds of the event. O’Mara ended the season with a sparkling scoring average of 75.42.
Gannon’s Maria Arenas was voted Freshman of the Year. She is the third Golden Knight to receive the accolade and first since 2011-12 (Saskia Merz). Arenas turned in 14 rounds of action while finishing with two top 5’s and four top 10’s. The freshman finished ninth at the PSAC’s while her best finish was second at the Glade Springs Invitational. Arenas registered a scoring average of 80.2.
Gannon’s Scott Stano was tabbed Coach of the Year for the third time in the last four seasons. He is the first coach in the sport to win the award in consecutive seasons. Under his direction, Gannon claimed its fourth PSAC crown while three athletes were named first-team all-conference honorees and one athlete was voted to the second team. The Golden Knights finished in the top five in five of six events, including victories at the Evann Parker Memorial and Glade Springs Invitational.
Mercyhurst senior Abigail Vietmeier landed on an all-conference team for the third time in her career.
