ERIE, Pa. – The Millersville University men’s soccer team claimed its third consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship with a 2-0 win over Gannon University Sunday afternoon at Saxon Stadium on the campus of Mercyhurst University.
Millersville (15-5-0) scored twice in the second half on goals from Matteo Adiletta and Anthony Calamia. This is Millersville’s fourth overall PSAC men’s soccer championship (2011, 2018, 2019).
Midfielder Bob Hennessey was named the tournament MVP. Hennessey assisted on two of the six goals Millersville scored en route to the championship victory.
In the 66th minute, Adiletta received a throw-in from Hennessey and put it into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Marauders a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Calamia provided an insurance goal when he sent a pass from Matthew Lynch into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The Marauders put 13 of their 23 shots on target. Calamia and Lynch each had three shots on goal.
Millersville goalkeeper Bobby Bosch had a relatively quiet afternoon between the posts, needing just one save to shut out the Golden Knights.
Gannon launched eight shots, only one of which was on frame. Benjamin Querling sent in three shots. Goalkeeper Maximiliano Rocco made 10 saves.
Both teams battled difficult weather conditions with rain turning into snow and coating the field by the 90th minute.
With the win, Millersville earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Tournament. The NCAA Men’s Selection show is scheduled for Monday at 6:30 p.m. where the other top teams in the PSAC will find out if they are still playing for the chance at a DII title.
