Mitchell, Martin Jr., Fowler Jr. and Schaetzle Claim Major Awards; All-Conference Teams Released
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the members of the 2021 PSAC All-Conference football teams Wednesday. Noah Mitchell and Jermal Martin Jr. of California University of Pennsylvania were selected as offensive and defensive athletes of the year, respectively, while Tyrone Fowler Jr. of Indiana University of Pennsylvania was named rookie of the year. Marty Schaetzle of Mercyhurst University was selected as coach of the year.
The all-conference teams were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
For Noah Mitchell, he earns the Offensive Player of the Year honor after being a key component in Cal U’s 10-1 season. The Vulcans were Co-PSAC West Champions following a season in which Mitchell threw for 2,937 yards and 25 touchdowns, which was tied for second in the league. He had a passer efficiency rating of 144.8 and had huge games against PSAC West foes in Gannon, IUP and Seton Hill. The last student-athlete from Cal U to garner offensive player of the year honors was Garry Brown in 2016.
Cal’s major awards did not stop there as Jermal Martin Jr. was named the PSAC’s Defensive Player of the Year in the West. Martin Jr. was a huge factor in a Cal U pass defense that was second in the PSAC in yards per game at 169.1. The Vulcans were also first in the league in pass defense efficiency with a 98.3 rating. Martin Jr. was huge in that pass game pulling in four interceptions, two of which he ran back for touchdowns. He also had 10 total passes defended and a forced fumble.
IUP’s Tyrone Fowler Jr. proved to be one of the top pass rushers in the league this season as just a redshirt freshman. Fowler Jr. finished the year with 29.0 total tackles, 11.5 TFLs and 7.0 sacks. He also added three forced fumbles and a pass breakup. His three forced fumbles were tied for second in the PSAC.
Mercyhurst head coach Marty Schaetzle ended his career with a Coach of the Year honor. Schaetzle announced his retirement at the beginning of the season and coached his last game with the Lakers last Saturday. Schaetzle ends his career with Mercyhurst with a 76-69 overall record since Mercyhurst joined the PSAC. A highlight to his final season, Mercyhurst defeated hometown rival Gannon on Senior day, 24-13, to end his home career.
IUP had the most all-conference selections with 17, while PSAC West Co-Champions Cal U and Slippery Rock had 10 each.
