Bren Taylor and Tommy Pellis highlight All-PSAC Baseball Honors
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- Millersville University swept all the major awards in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division, while in the Western Division, Seton Hill University garnered Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year honors. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown registered Pitcher of the Year recognition. For the Marauders, Bren Taylor was the Athlete of the Year, Jeff Taylor the Pitcher of the Year, Conor Cook the Rookie of the Year and Jon Shehan the Coach of the Year. Seton Hill’s Tommy Pellis was Athlete of the Year in the West, and he was joined by teammate Owen Sabol for Rookie of the Year and his head coach, Marc Marizzaldi. Pitt-Johnstown’s Dylan Heid was the top hurler in the West.
All-conference teams and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
East athlete of the year Bren Taylor had a stellar season and is leading the top team in the east in several categories including batting average (.399), OPS (1.104), total hits (57) and on-base percentage (.503). Taylor was also top tier when it came to fielding his position. He has a perfect fielding percentage on 50 chances, recorded 47 putouts and three outfield assists.
On the hill, the other Taylor, Jeff Taylor, has been nearly unhittable for the Marauders. In 11 starts, he has mustered a 2.47 ERA (17 ER in 62.0 IP), 71 punchouts and just 19 walks. He is 10-1 and has posted an insane 0.95 WHIP and three complete games.
Millersville has not made it any easier on opponent bats this season with Rookie of the Year honoree Conor Cook. Cook is 4-0 in eight appearances and five starts tallying a 3.24 ERA (12 ER in 33.1 IP) while punching out 44 hitters. He also has registered three complete games and has a 1.20 WHIP.
Marauders head coach Jon Shehan mentored his team to 28-13 overall record and a 23-8 PSAC mark and earned the top seed in the PSAC Baseball Tournament. Millersville is second in the league in team batting average (.326) and first in the West and fifth in the league in team ERA (4.92).
West athlete of the year Tommy Pellis helped lead the Griffins to being one of the top offenses in the region. He’s hitting .415 (51-for-123) with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs. He is also slugging .829 and has an OPS of 1.348. He is also a threat on the basepaths going 11-for-15 in stolen-base attempts.
West pitcher of the year Dylan Heid was a top hurler not only in the west but was one of the top hurlers in the region. Heid was 7-2 in nine starts with a 1.37 ERA (9 ER in 59.1 IP) with 105 strikeouts. Six of his nine starts were complete games and four were shutouts. He held opponents to a .125 batting average.
Owen Sabol for the Griffins is second to Pellis in batting average hitting .375 (39-for-104) with four home runs and 25 RBIs in 37 games started. Sabol also has a 1.112 OPS and a .545 on-base percentage. When on the basepaths, he is tough, leading the team in stolen bases and is 22-for-27 in attempts.
Coach Marrizaldi has put together one of the finest seasons at Seton Hill history with a 34-4 record (.895 winning pct). The Griffins were 23-4 in conference play and have won 11 in-a-row. SHU is also undefeated at home (22-0) and was named the top seed in the Western Division heading into the PSAC Tournament. The Griffins have the best team batting average in the West (.323) and the most RBIs in either division with 286. SHU is also the top team in the PSAC on the hill with a team ERA of 2.91.
PSAC All-Conference teams in baseball are two teams from the East and West. The first team consists of all nine positions, an extra infielder, three starting pitchers, a relief pitcher, a utility player and a designated hitter. The second team consists of the same minus the extra infielder and the position he played.
All-conference teams and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
