Beeman and Terrell Earn PSAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Year Honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2022 women’s basketball all-conference teams, the league announced Thursday afternoon.
 
The all-conference and major award winners are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
 
In the East, Shepherd junior Abby Beeman followed up her 2020 East Freshman of the Year honor with the 2022 East Athlete of the Year award. She leads the conference in points scored with 537, including 67 3-pointers, and ranks first with 225 assists. She averages 7.8 assists per game, which ranks first in the nation. Beeman earned PSAC East Athlete of the Week three times and picked up a Defensive Athlete of the Week honor this season. She led the Rams to the No. 3 seed in the PSAC East for the 2022 Women’s Basketball Tournament.
 
Bloomsburg graduate student Emma Saxton was selected as the Defensive Athlete of the Year. Her 54 steals rank first for the Huskies and she averaged 6.3 rebounds per game. Saxton started all of Bloomsburg’s games and averaged 36 minutes per game. She helped the Huskies to the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the 2022 PSAC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
 
Abbey Hearn of Kutztown was named Rookie of the Year. She recorded 297 points, 135 rebounds, and 42 blocked shots. Hearn was named PSAC East Athlete of the Week following three games where she scored a combined 51 points, including a career-high 23 against Mercyhurst. Kutztown was the PSAC East Regular Season Champion with an 18-3 record.
 
Kutztown Head Coach Janet Malouf is in her 27th season leading the Golden Bears. Her team’s 25 regular season wins account for the highest win total in her career. This is her fourth time earning the award, as she previously received it in 2009, 1998, and 1996.
 
In the PSAC West, Cal U junior Dejah Terrell was voted Athlete of the Year. She leads the PSAC in points per game with 19.1 and scored 516 points this season. She shot 46.9% from the field. Terrell pulled in 96 offensive rebounds and dished out 31 assists. She was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week four times this season and she led Cal U to the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West and a first-round bye in the 2022 PSAC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
 
Terrell also earned Defensive Athlete of the Year. She recorded 68 blocks for an average of 2.6 per game and she also posted 42 steals. Terrell grabbed 163 defensive rebounds in 27 games played. She received PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week honors six times. The Vulcans posted a 17-4 record in conference play and a 23-4 mark overall.
 
Seton Hill guard Christiane Frye received Rookie of the Year honors. She scored 318 points this season, including 34 three-pointers, and pulled in 122 total rebounds. Frye is third in the conference with 65 steals this season. She has appeared in 31 of the Griffins’ 32 games and she helped Seton Hill to the No. 3 seed in the PSAC West in the 2022 PSAC Women’s Basketball Tournament.
 
Cal U head Coach Jessica Strom was voted Coach of the Year for the third time. She is in her 10th season leading the Vulcans and this is the seventh consecutive season that her team has recorded at least 20 wins. Two of her players, Terrell and Ciaira Loyd, earned first team all-conference honors.
