IUP takes down Slippery Rock, 4-1, to win Women’s Tennis Championship

FINALS
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. ---
The Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks women’s tennis team defeated The Rock of Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team for the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Title, 4-1.
 
SRU came out to a hot start with a doubles point, but IUP then won four singles matches to capture the title.
 
The Rock’s top doubles team of Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez got the day’s first victory defeating IUP’s Joanna Stralka and Natasha Munday, 6-2. SRU also took the third flight doubles match as Georgie Lancaster and Zoe Heed came out on top with a 6-4 win over Lydia Vlachou and Laura Dunarova.
 
However, in the singles matches, IUP prevailed with some commanding victories.
 
In the second flight singles match, Stralka defeated Gonzalez Sanchez, 6-3,6-2 to tie the overall score up, 1-1. On courts five and six, Vlachou defeated Isherwood, 6-2,6-2 and Dunarova took down Heed, 6-1, 6-4.
 
With the overall score now, 3-1, Karolin Kirchtag battled Lois Page to the third set and eventually prevailed, clinching the title with a 2-6,6-1,6-1 victory.

SEMIFINALS
IUP took down Eastern Division foe, West Chester, 4-0 in their semifinal match. 

Slippery Rock also shutout their semifinal opponent in Millersville, 4-0

The Crimson Hawks will look to defend their PSAC Title having won in 2021. 

The Final Match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. 

QUARTERFINALS
Slippery Rock defeated Mercyhurst 4-3 Tuesday to advance. The Rock moves on to face No. 1 East seed Millersville at 2 p.m. Friday. 

West Chester won 4-0 over Bloomsburg on Wednesday and advacnes to face No. 1 West seed IUP at 2 p.m. on Friday. 
 
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- The 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Championship is set to begin on Tuesday, April 26 with two quarterfinal matches. The quarterfinals will be held at campus sites, with the higher seed hosting, before the semifinal and final matches take place at the Burt Reese Tennis Center on the Bloomsburg University campus Friday and Saturday, April 29-30.
 
Millersville won the regular season PSAC East title with a 7-0 record in conference play. The Marauders are 15-7 overall, and the team’s 15 wins are the highest for the program since the 2000-01 season. Chloe Abramowitz, Noelle Htwar, and Julie Wallace each have seven individual wins in conference play. The doubles duos of Wallace/Htwar and Abramowitz/Maria Ojeda have both won four doubles matches against PSAC opponents.
 
West Chester finished the PSAC regular season 6-1 to claim the No. 2 seed, with their only loss coming to Millersville. Elaina Lee and Alyssa Skulsky are both undefeated in their six conference matches. Skulsky and Yuno Oe are 5-1 as a doubles duo and Davica Massaro and Tori Alexander are undefeated in their five PSAC doubles matches.
 
The Bloomsburg Huskies are the No. 3 seed with a 5-2 conference record. Lexi Quackenbush, Isabella Sarquis, and Rea Hagishima lead the Huskies with five conference wins apiece. On the doubles side, Alyussa Mazurek and Sarquis are 4-0 and Quackenbush and Hagishima are 3-0.
 
West Chester will host Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. In the regular season, West Chester defeated Bloomsburg 6-1. The winner will advance to face IUP in the semifinals on Friday, April 29.
 
IUP claimed the PSAC West regular season crown with a 6-0 record. The Crimson Hawks are 15-7 overall. 2021 PSAC Individual Champion Karolin Kirchtag won her 29th singles match of the season last week, and she’s 6-0 in the PSAC. Kirchtag and Katy Gradon won the 2021 Doubles Championship in October, and they went 4-1 this spring.
 
Slippery Rock posted a 5-1 mark in conference play to earn the No. 2 seed. Gabriela Del Val Del Toro leads the team with a 6-0 mark in conference play. Teddi Isherwood and Del Val Del Toro and Lois Page and Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez both have four wins as doubles pairs.
 
Mercyhurst is the No. 3 seed with a 4-2 conference record. The Lakers will look to Nadja Osojic and Naomi Jahr in the tournament.
 
Slippery Rock plays host to Mercyhurst at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. The Rock defeated the Lakers 6-1 on April 14. The winner of the match will move on to face Millersville in the semifinals on Friday, April 29.
