East Stroudsburg finishes as DII Runner-Up in Women’s Lacrosse

ST. LOUIS, Mo. --- The East Stroudsburg University Warriors fell to the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds in the NCAA Division II National Title game Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri, 11-9.
 
The Warriors finish the season with a 20-2 overall record and are the runner-up in DII women’s lacrosse.
 
They were led by PSAC East Athlete of the Year Emily Mitarotonda who had three goals and one assist.
 
Maddie Heck and Bagatta finished with two goals apiece in the loss.
 
Indianapolis claimed their first ever DII National Title in women’s lacrosse.


ST. LOUIS, Mo. --- The East Stroudsburg Warriors Women’s Lacrosse Team got yet another overtime victory in the DII Tournament with a 13-12 victory over Queens (NC) in the DII Semifinal match.
 
ESU was led by PSAC East Athlete of the Year Emily Mitarotonda who tallied four goals and an assist.
 
Goalkeeper McKenzie Gaghan registered eight saves for the Warriors.
 
ESU ended the third quarter trailing, 10-9, but it was the play of Gaghan who kept them battling.
 
The Warriors’ Maddie Heck scored a goal to tie the game, 12-12, with 2:27 left to play.
 
A key moment at the end of regulation occurred when with 16 seconds remaining, Rebecca Kinsley of Queens registered a turnover caused by Gaghan, who tossed the ball to the far side of the field sending it into overtime.
 
A similar moment occurred when Queens won the draw control to start overtime. Queens’ Kaitlyn Hardin fired a shot to open the period and Gaghan made a key save.
 
ESU then cleared the ball and had a breakaway. Kiki Fitzpatrick then hit Sophia Graffeo for the one-timer and the golden goal in overtime as the Warriors won, 13-12.

East Stroudsburg will now await the winner of Indianapolis and Adelphi to play in the National Championship game Sunday at 3 p.m. on the campus of Lindenwood in St. Louis, Missouri.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. ---
The East Stroudsburg University Warriors defeated the West Chester University Golden Rams in overtime at Eiler-Martin Stadium Sunday, 13-12, and registered their second consecutive Atlantic Region Title in women’s lacrosse.
 
The Warriors and Golden Rams battled as they have many times in the last few years.

At the end of the first period, West Chester had the lead, but ESU bounced back in quarter two with three goals, and the teams were level at halftime.
 
WCU put up two goals in the third period and ESU recorded three with the score 7-6 in favor of ESU at the end of three.
 
In the fourth, scoring increased on both sides with West Chester tallying 6 goals and ESU 5, taking us to overtime with the score tied, 12-12.
 
In the overtime period, WCU won the draw control, but turned the ball over. ESU’s Kiki Fitzpatrick picked up the groundball, passed it to Gianna LeDuc who tossed it over to Emily Mitarotonda who beat the keeper for a one-timer, and the game-winning strike, as ESU won, 13-12.
 
With the win, ESU now heads to the NCAA DII Semifinals. The Final Four will be re-seeded and the semifinal round begins Friday, May 20th.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --- East Stroudsburg and West Chester won their opening games of the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament.
 
East Stroudsburg 13, Mercyhurst 3
East Stroudsburg defeated Mercyhurst 13-3 in the first game of the day. Emily Mitarotonda scored five goals, Kiki Fitzpatrick and Gianna LeDuc each dished out three assists, and Leduc also scored a goal. Maggie Sell caused four turnovers and picked up six ground balls. Maggie Newton scored two goals for Mercyhurst. The Warriors set a program record for wins in a season with 18 with today’s win.
 
West Chester 19, Seton Hill 10
West Chester won 19-10 over Seton Hill in the second Atlantic Region game. Keri Barnett and Hannah Stanislawczyk each scored six goals. Lindsay Monigle added two goals and four assists. Alaina TeSelle, Piper Conlan, and Jaclyn Frank each scored two goals for Seton Hill, and Megan Bunker won 11 draw controls.
 
East Stroudsburg and West Chester will face off Sunday at 12 p.m. on the East Stroudsburg University campus.

INDIANAPOLIS --- The 2022 NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament Women’s Lacrosse field was announced Sunday evening, following the conclusion of the Division II Women’s Lacrosse Conference Championship schedule.
 
Representing the Atlantic Region will be the top four institutions in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference including No.1 East Stroudsburg, No.2 West Chester, No.3 Seton hill and No.4 Mercyhurst.
 
Following the PSAC Championship, East Stroudsburg is the top seed and the host in the region following a 15-12 PSAC Championship Final win over West Chester. The Warriors are 17-1 overall this season and have won six-in-a-row. ESU will host No.4 Mercyhurst in the first round as the Lakers are 14-5 overall this season and lost in the semifinal round of the PSAC Tournament Friday.
 
The No.2 seed West Chester will play No.3 Seton Hill. The pair met in the semifinals as well with WCU coming out on top. The Golden Rams are 16-2 overall and the Griffins are 14-4 overall.
 
The Atlantic Region Tournament begins Friday, May 13 in East Stroudsburg. The Warriors will play first at 11 a.m. against the Lakers, and the Golden Rams will play second against Seton Hill at 3 p.m.
