LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The 2023 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Field Hockey All-Conference teams were announced on Wednesday afternoon, with East Stroudsburg's Jady van Gils (Athlete of the Year), Kutztown's Sarah Gatehouse (Defensive Player of the Year), and Bloomsburg's Genna Bush (Freshman of the Year) and Nikki Hartranft (Coach of the Year) all honored with major awards.
The all-conference teams and major awards are determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches.
Junior midfielder Jady van Gils earns the Athlete of the Year honor after leading the East Stroudsburg Warriors to a 15-2 overall record (8-1 PSAC), the conference's No. 1 seed for the 2023 PSAC Championship, and a No. 1 national ranking in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II Coaches Poll. Van Gils scored nine goals and assisted on four others for 22 points, trailing only teammate Madison Kline's 23 points for the team lead. Van Gils' 79 shots (40 on goal) were also top-five marks in the conference. Her tireless efforts in the midfield elevated her to the award and a First Team All-Conference spot after being named to the Second Team in 2022.
Senior back Sarah Gatehouse claims the Defensive Player of the Year award as the anchor of the Kutztown Golden Bears' record-setting defense. Gatehouse and the Kutztown defense shut out 13 regular season opponents in 2023, a program record and the most in the nation. The Golden Bears have allowed only seven goals to opponents this fall, an average of .41 per game, which is tops in all of Division II. Gatehouse has also contributed with seven goals and four assists, leading her team with 18 points in 2023.
Bloomsburg's Genna Bush was voted Freshman of the Year after scoring nine goals (putting her in the top 10 in the conference) and adding an assist for 19 points in her debut campaign. She also scored four game-winning goals as Bloomsburg finished the regular season with a 14-4 overall record (5-4 PSAC) and won six of its final seven games.
The Huskies' head coach, Nikki Hartranft, earned Coach of the Year honors thanks to the team's rapid improvement. Bloomsburg finished 9-9 and 4-5 in conference play in 2022 but turned five of those overall losses into victories in 2023. Bloomsburg's 55 goals offensively were fourth-most in the PSAC, while its 23 allowed defensively was fifth-lowest. Six of her Bloomsburg players earned a place on an All-Conference team in 2023.
Of the 39 total PSAC Field Hockey All-Conference honorees this fall, 17 are former all-conference selections, while 22 have been named to an All-PSAC team for the first time in their respective careers.
