PSAC announces addition of Frostburg State field hockey as Associate Member beginning in 2024 season

The Bobcats will become the 11th field hockey program in the PSAC when they join the conference in the fall of 2024.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the addition of Frostburg State University as an Associate Member in the sport of field hockey beginning in the 2024 season. With the addition of Frostburg State, the PSAC will feature 11 field hockey programs in the fall of 2024. The Bobcats’ field hockey team has been competing as an independent since the 2019-20 season, when Frostburg State joined the Mountain East Conference—which does not sponsor field hockey—after the institution transitioned from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II.

“We are very pleased to have Frostburg State join us as an Associate Member,” said PSAC Commissioner Steve Murray. “It helps stabilize our conference field hockey schedule and provides them a home as well as postseason opportunities. We look forward to having the Bobcats competing in the PSAC.”

FSU field hockey has competed frequently against PSAC institutions since 2019, including a pair of wins in the 2022 season over then-nationally-ranked No. 7 IUP and No. 4 Millersville. The Bobcats’ eight wins in 2022 matched the program’s highest win total since the 2015 season.

Frostburg State field hockey is led by Kaitlin Thompson, who enters her seventh year as head coach in 2023. Thompson has guided her players to academic success off the field, as well, with nine players named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II All-Academic Squad in 2022. Additionally, Frostburg State has earned 12 NFHCA Scholars of Distinction since Thompson took over the program.

"We are thrilled to have our new hockey home in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as an Associate Member,” said Thompson. “Our team is grateful for our Athletic Director, Troy Dell, putting in countless hours to help make this happen. With all of the growth we have been able to accomplish since moving to the Division II level, we feel that our program will contribute to the already strong competition the PSAC offers while adding fresh rivalries to this storied conference. The PSAC is the premier league for Division II field hockey, so our team is extremely excited to now have the opportunity to compete for post-season play at the highest level.”
