PSAC honors Fall Top 10 award winners

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference is pleased to announce its 2023-24 Fall Top 10 award recipients, nominated and voted on by the sports information and athletic communication directors of the conference.
 
The PSAC Top 10 was initiated in the 1998-99 academic year and is awarded to those men and women who excel in both the classroom and in athletic competition.

The honorees for Fall 2023-24 are: Kylie Anicic (Edinboro), Ethan Brentham (Sippery Rock), Sarah Gatehouse (Kutztown), Brayden Long (Slippery Rock), Aaron Maynard (Millersville), Hannah Meyer (Mansfield), James Pool (Gannon), Garrett Quinan (Shippensburg), Jady van Gils (East Stroudsburg), and Karah Van Horn (Mercyhurst).

In the 2023 cross country season, Anicic won both the PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. She was a first-team All-American finishing 12th at the NCAA Championship meet. That finish was the best by an Edinboro runner since 2006. She was the 2023 PSAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.

Brentham was named 1st team All-PSAC, All-Region, was an individual national qualifier, and earned the 2023 Elite 90 award for the highest GPA at the national championship meet. He finished third overall at the PSAC Championships to help lead Slippery Rock to a runner-up finish in the team standings to mark SRU's highest team finish in men's XC since 2008. Brentham placed 10th overall at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships to earn a spot at the National Championships as an individual qualifier and helped SRU to a fourth place finish at regionals, its highest finish since 2012.

Gatehouse was team captain and defensive backbone of the NCAA Division II National Champion Golden Bears. She tallied seven goals (fourth-most on KU) along with 19 points and five assists (both second-most on the team.) The Golden Bear defense allowed just 11 goals all season and carried a goals-against-average of .497. Gatehouse was also named the PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Year.

Long led the PSAC and Super Region One in nearly every passing stat, including completion percent (69.35), passing yards (3,808), passing touchdowns (35) and passing efficiency (163.4). He completed 312-of-450 passes for 3,808 yards with 35 touchdowns and just six interceptions while leading Slippery Rock to the NCAA quarterfinals, a 12-2 overall record and a No. 10 final national ranking. He was ranked in the top 10 in Division II in nearly every passing category this season, including: 4th in completion percentage (69.3%), 7th in completions per game (22.3), 9th in passing efficiency (163.4), 5th in passing touchdowns (35), 6th in passing yards (3,808), 6th in points responsible for (240). He ranks No. 2 in SRU history in single-season passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Maynard earns his second PSAC Top 10 award after another dominant season as the anchor of Millersville's defense, helping the Marauders hold opponents to just 17 goals in 21 games, including 11 clean sheets. He scored two goals, including the game-winner in the PSAC Championship, and was voted the PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America First Team.
 

Hannah Meyer

Meyer led Mansfield's defensive efforts all season, accumulating three goals, two assists, and three defensive saves in 2023. She helped the Mounties earn the first-ever home playoff victory in program history, including scoring the game-winner in the PSAC Quarterfinals. She was named to the NFHCA All-America Second Team, NFHCA Division II Senior Team, and PSAC All-Conference Second Team. She is a four-time honoree of the NFHCA All-Academic Squad and has earned four PSAC Scholar-Athlete awards.
 

James Pool

Pool was one of the highest scoring midfielders in the nation. Pool tied for the PSAC lead with 17 goals and was second with 40 points as Gannon advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. He ranked fifth in goals nationally in Division II and ranked seventh in points.
 
Garrett Quinan

Quinan was named the 2023 PSAC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year after a fall season that included a win at the 2023 PSAC Cross Country meet and a fifth-place finish at the Atlantic Region meet. Quinan became just the third Shippensburg runner ever to win the PSAC individual title. He added a 66th-place mark at the NCAA National Championships (the second-best finish by a PSAC competitor) and was the Raider's No. 1 runner in the final five meets of 2023.

Van Gils was named the NFHCA National Player of the Year in Division II, the NFHCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year, PSAC Athlete of the Year, and PSAC Tournament MVP after a season in which she registered 25 points on 10 goals and five assists. She scored the game-winning goal in double overtime against Shippensburg in the PSAC Championship Game to give the Warriors back-to-back PSAC titles.

Van Horn was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after recording 29 points in 2023 (9 goals, 11 assists), which was the fifth-highest total in the conference while her 11 assists was the second-most total. She was named to the USCA All-Region First Team and the D2CCA All-Region Second Team and was honored as a member of the CSC Academic All-District and a CSC Second Team Academic All-American, the second Mercyhurst women's soccer player to ever collect those honors in program history.
