Weirich, Smerick named Athletes of the Year; 2025 PSAC Softball All-Conference and Major Awards announced

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference released the 2025 PSAC Softball All-Conference teams and Major Award winners on Tuesday afternoon.

The All-Conference teams and Major Award winners are determined by a vote of the league's head coaches.

In the Western Division, major award winners included Gannon’s Emma Smerick as Athlete of the Year, Slippery Rock’s Alexsa Hurd as Pitcher of the Year, Seton Hill’s Shelby Telegdy as Freshman of the Year, and Slippery Rock head coach Stacey Rice as Coach of the Year.
 
The Eastern Division awards went to East Stroudsburg’s Abigail Weirich as Athlete of the Year, Shepherd’s Madelayne Ruffner as Pitcher, Lock Haven’s Blaire Balestrini as Freshman of the Year, and East Stroudsburg head coach Jaime Wohlbach as Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
 
WESTERN DIVISION
 
Gannon sophomore Emma Smerick was selected as the 2025 Western Division Athlete of the Year after batting .405 and collecting 60 hits, 57 runs scored, 33 RBIs, and 35 stolen bases to help the Golden Knights secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming PSAC Championship.
 
Slippery Rock’s Alexsa Hurd was named Pitcher of the Year. She tied the program’s all-time wins record with 39 (16 of which came in 2025) and finished the regular season with a 2.71 ERA in 147.0 innings. She struck out 228 batters, the highest amount in the Western Division, and was a large part of The Rock’s run to the No. 1 seed in the West this spring.
 
Seton Hill’s Shelby Telegdy was voted Freshman of the Year after success in the circle and in the batter’s box. She tossed 138.2 innings with a 3.18 ERA and 83 strikeouts and hit .381 (40-for-105) with 23 runs scored, 36 RBIs, and nine home runs.
 
Slippery Rock head coach Stacey Rice earns her first PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year honor after guiding The Rock to the division’s top seed and a 27-19 overall record (21-7 PSAC), a marked improvement over 2024’s 25-27 overall record and 18-13 conference mark.

EASTERN DIVISION
 
East Stroudsburg’s Abigail Weirich was voted Eastern Division Athlete of the Year after hitting .411 with 72 hits, 50 runs scored and a PSAC-leading 56 RBIs. She also swiped 35 bases in 38 attempts to lead the high-powered ESU offense, which scored a conference-best 308 runs this spring.
 
Shepherd sophomore Madelayne Ruffner put together an exemplary season in the circle for the Rams, posting a .083 ERA in 135.1 innings pitched. She struck out 261 batters, tallied 16 wins, and also posted a pair of saves. Her 61 hits allowed is the lowest total in the PSAC, as is her .130 batting-average-against.
 
Lock Haven’s Blaire Balestrini was selected as Freshman of the Year after finishing the regular season with a .399 batting average, 30 runs scored, 33 RBIs, and 11 home runs (tied for fourth-most in the PSAC.)
 
East Stroudsburg head coach Jaime Wohlbach was honored with her second consecutive  Coach of the Year award after guiding the Warriors to a 26-5-1 conference record (42-9-1 overall) , the third consecutive 40-plus win season for ESU.
