BLOOMSBURG WIN”S THIRD-STRAIGHT PSAC SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP (5/7/94)

WILLIAMSPORT – It took a seventh and deciding game, but Bloomsburg left no doubt that it is the dominate force in PSAC softball as the Huskies beat California (Pa.) 14-8 in the Pennsylvania Sate Athletic Conference Championship at Elm Park today (Saturday). It was the third-straight title for Bloomsburg who now advances to the NCAA Division II Championships next weekend.

The seventh game was a slugfest as Bloomsburg hammered out 18 hits against California’s 10. Leading Bloomsburg’s offensive attack on the day was shortstop Jen Lefever who went 7 for 8 on the day with 3 homeruns, 3 doubles and 7 RBI’s.

To reach the championship round of t he double-elimination event, California edged Kutztown 1-0. California then advanced to face Bloomsburg, a team they would have to beat twice to win the championship.

In Game 6 of the tournament, Jen Wagner’s 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs gave California a 6-5 win over Bloomsburg and forced the seventh game of the tournament.

Bloomsburg jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings in the finale, but California answered back in the home half of the 3rd as Christy Cameron doubled to drive in tow runs. Cameron was plated on a Heather Lucus single to knot the game at 3-3.

After exchanging runs in the fourth, Bloomsburg blew open a lead it would never surrender, plating 5 runs in 5th and 4 more in the 6th giving the Huskies a 13-4 lead heading to the bottom of the 6th. Most of the damage in the 5th and 6th for Bloomsburg came from the bats of Emily Brown (2 doubles), Brenda Moffat (2 doubles) and Kris DeSantis (single, double).

California, who came from behind to get two earlier wins in the tournament, scored 4 in the 6th before Bloomsburg reliever Bobbie McMail, who had reentered as a pitcher put out the fire and guided the Huskies to the title.
