CALIFORNIA, Pa.---Kelley Tiesi pitched a one-hitter against California (Pa.) to lead Shippensburg to back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships. Shippensburg won the game 3-0.
Tiesi had a no-hitter going through five innings. In the top of the sixth, Gabrielle Rendon shot a double down the left field line that just landed fair for the only hit of the game. Tiesi was named the PSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for her stellar performances.
In three games, she pitched 20 innings with 38 strikeouts, including 15 in the championship game. For the tourney Tiesi gave up only one run on five hits. She raises her record to 25-1.
Shippensburg rocked California starter Maggie Fricko for two runs in the first inning. With two outs, Jamie Dacey reached first when she was hit by a pitch. Sarah Costa got a bat on the ball, hitting a single to right field. The fielder bobbled the ball, and Dacey and Costa hustled to third and second respectively. Mary McKee came through with a base hit to left field that sent Dacey home. Brenna Eck had the big hit of the inning, shooting a double down the left field line to bring home Costa. California made a pitching change, bringing in Becky Mezyk, who got Steph Reavey out with a pop up to end the inning.
The Lady Raiders pulled farther ahead in the second, sending one across the plate for a 3-0 lead. With Kristin Marll on first, Beth Rudai shot a double into left center field. Marll came around and barreled through the catcher to score, allowing the ball to get away from the catcher. Rudai tried to score from third after advancing on the throw, but Mezyk tagged her out at home.
Fricko was the losing pitcher. Her record falls to 14-5.
