IUP WINS PSAC WOMEN’S SOCCER TITLE 1-0 AT BLOOMSBURG
In only its second full season fielding a varsity women’s soccer team, IUP won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship with a 1-0 shutout at Bloomsburg Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Tammy Kennedy scored an unassisted goal just 39 seconds into the second half, and it was all the Indians needed. For the freshman midfielder from Coatesville (a Downingtown High graduate), it was her third goal for a 20-game season.
Leading the defense was freshman goalkeeper Kristen Bardes (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley), who was credited with saving 10 of 13 shots on goal the Lady Huskies took. IUP found opportunities to take 23 shots.
Coach Brian Lenosky’s team now had won 13 games while losing five and tieing two. Senior Amy Peterson (Moon) is the Indians’ leading scorer with 17 goals and four assists.
IUP is ranked 10th in the nation in NCAA Division II prior to Sunday’s championship game. Bloomsburg, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, has a 15-2-1 record. Two weeks ago at Bloomsburg, the Lady Huskies had edged IUP 1-0.
Sunday’s game was the second-ever PSAC championship contest. IUP had just missed playing in it last fall, as the Indians finished third in the conference with a 14-4 record. Bloomsburg lost to East Stroudsburg 2-1 in the ’94 title clash.
