at Lock Haven University, Lock Haven, PA
The Lock Haven University Lady Eagles used an 8-0 regular season to earn the right to host rival Bloomsburg University in the 1995 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship game today.
That home field advantage paid off as LHU bolted out to an early 2-0 first half lead and, after withstanding an early BU second-half flurry, added one more goal to post the 3-0 win and earn its second title in a row, defending its title of a year ago and moving itself one step closer to a spot in the Division II National Championship game.
The contest, the sixth straight PSAC title game between these two rivals, heated up when LHU scored the first goal of the game with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half when Lock Haven senior Tracy Wilcox fed classmate Lori Levanthall a long pass from far right of the Bloom cage and Leventhall one-timed the call past BU goalie Bethany Canner. The goal was the first allowed by the freshman keeper all season.
Less than seven minutes later, the PSAC’s leading scorer, LHU junior Melanie Helm ran a solo “fast break” by four BU defenders and, with a nifty finishing move, knocked a second ball by Canner for a 2-0 Lock Haven lead. Lock Haven took that lead into the half-time break. Lock Haven dominated the first half, out-shooting Bloomsburg 11-2 in the half and attempting three corners to BU’s zero.
Bloomsburg opened the second half with a fury, applying most of the offensive pressure and keeping the ball in front of LHU goalie Caroline Gillich. Gillich fought off every BU salve through the first 10 minutes when LHU began to force the offensive action. With just under 21:00 left in the contest, new Bloomsburg goalie Bev Hartley allowed a Diane Drumheller shot to glide by her, assuming it was a shot outside the 25 yard shooting line. But the shot was ruled within the legal zone and the goal increased Lock Haven’s lead to 3-0, and posting the final score.
LHU out-shot Bloomsburg 18-12 for the game, with Lady Eagle goalie Gillich collecting eight saves in earning her 14th shutout in 19 games. Wilcox, who set up the first goal of the game and dominated midfield play, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
