CALIFORNIA – The Warriors’ Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference soccer dynasty rolled on Saturday as Coach Jerry Sheska’s team edged California, 2-1, for its fifth straight PSAC championship and ninth in ten years.
Forward Ahmet Kose booted in the winning goal with 7:20 remaining and was named the game’s most valuable player. Kose came across the field from left to right, took a through-pass from Samuels and connected from 12 yards out into the bottom right corner of the nets.
ESU had taken a quick 1-0 lead in the game as Tom Mustac tallied his 14th goal of the season at the 2:10 mark. Kurt Nusshag started the play with a cross which Kose touched to Mustac for a shot from six feet out.
California’s Scott McDavid tied the game 13:45 into the second half off a pass from Tomas Boltnar.
The ESU defense held the rest of the way with goalie Jason Land making three saves to post his fourth straight championship game win.
As usual, he aided by strong performances from his backline of sweeper Sean Stewart, Samuels at stopper, outside backs Nusshag and John Sunshine and defensive midfielder Eric Kolar.
The five consecutive titles matched the conference mark set by Lock Haven from to 1981. It was also ESU’s 15th PSAC crown, tying the Bald Eagles for the most titles won by any school.
Note: East Stroudsburg beat West Chester in the PSAC Semifinal, 4-1.
