East Stroudsburg, Pa. – Jorge Chapoy had the game of the season Sunday afternoon to lead East Stroudsburg to their seventh straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men’s soccer crown. Chapoy netted four goals, his first four goal game of the season, and the Warriors shut out their fifth opponent in a row for a 5-0 victory over California (Pa.).
Chapoy was selected as the PSAC championship MVP as the title gave ESU seven straight and 11 of the past 12 league crowns overall. The win takes ESU to 18-2-1 and matches the most victories in a season with the 1999 and 2000 campaigns. The Warriors will await word on Monday where and when they will play in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region playoffs.
He started the scoring early in the game with his first score coming just 4:59 into the contest from John King for a 1-0 ESU (18-2-1) lead.
After the first goal, California (13-7-3) battled strong for the next 34 minutes of play. The Vulcans kept the ball in the ESU half of the field and had various scoring opportunities including a shot just sailing wide of the goal. California came up empty as they did outshoot the host 8-6 in the first half.
ESU was able to get a handle on the play and it was Chapoy who found the net for the second goal. Joe Alcaro passed the ball through and Chapoy deeked and fired the ball in for the score at 38:02. Alcaro added his own tally less than for minutes later at 42:28 from Phil Merrill for a commanding 3-0 advantage at the intermission.
The Warriors stormed out of the half looking like a much different team and finding the back of the Cal goal for a fourth time. Senior back Kamar Samuels held onto the ball and played it to Chapoy, who turned and completed a ‘hat trick’ at 49:41. Chapoy rounded out his outstanding afternoon with a boot from 25 yards out on the right side to the upper left corner of the goal with Wes Gayle having the assist.
Chapoy’s four goals gave him his third 20-goal season of his career with 22 on the year and 69 over his four years. Goalie Bill Sterner recorded his 11th shutout of the season and the ESU defense has now held their foes scoreless over the last 512 minutes of action with 14 goals allowed in 21 matches.
