California senior Amber Santavy recorded 16 kills, led a stellar defensive effort with a team-high 22 digs and was named Championship MVP in leading the Vulcans to a 3-0 triumph over Clarion (27-5) in the 2007 PSAC Volleyball Championship Tournament.

The Vulcans, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region who had to beat the second and third-ranked teams in the region (both from the PSAC West) to win the PSAC crown, downed second-ranked Clarion for the third time this season by scores of 30-27, 37-35 and 30-20. In Friday’s semifinal match, Cal topped third-ranked Edinboro, 3-1.

It’s Cal’s second PSAC playoff title in the last three years and fourth in team history. The Vulcans, who are 32-3 overall and boast a 31-match win streak, improved their all-time PSAC playoff record to 11-1. Cal’s previous PSAC championships were in 1991, 1992 and 2005.

During the 31-match win streak, Cal has lost only nine games and registered 24 shutouts.

Cal earned the PSAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Vulcans hope to remain the top seed and earn the right to host the eight-team regional championship tournament when the NCAA Tournament bids are announced Monday (11/12) morning.

Santavy became the seventh player in team history to record more than 900 career kills in Friday’s win against Edinboro, added 16 to her career total Saturday and now has 925. She also had 37 digs in the weekend event, moving up three places to eighth on Cal’s career digs list with 896.

Sophomores Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) and Renata da Silva (Sao Paolo, Brazil/Sao Paolo) were also strong defensively against Clarion.

Hodge had 20 digs Saturday and became the first player in team history with more than 600 in a season (613).

da Silva, added 18 digs, three block assists, a service ace and 52 assists vs. Clarion. She is among Cal’s season leaders with 1,416 assists (fourth) and 50 service aces (tied for fourth) this season. da Silva is also 11th in career service aces with 86.

Also contributing to the attach against the Golden Eagles were sophomore Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), senior Katie Benick (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) and junior Tamara Hinic (Hamilton, Ont./Barton).

Nist had 18 kills and 10 digs. With 36 kills in the two tournament matches, Nist moved into eighth place on Cal’s single-season kills list (454) and 10th place on Cal’s career kills list (791).

Benick chipped in 11 kills, one solo block and three block assists while Hinic had nine kills, two service aces, two digs and four block assists.
