EAST STROUDSBURG SWEEPS PSAC SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Altoona, PA – East Stroudsburg University made it a clean sweep as both its men’s and women’s soccer teams won the 1994 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Soccer Championships here at Mansion Park today (Sunday).
East Stroudsburg’s women’s squad avenged an earlier loss to Bloomsburg downing the Huskies 2-1 in the first-ever women’s Conference Championship.
Their male counterparts captured their third consecutive PSAC title defeating Lock Haven 3-1 in the twenty-fifth men’s PSAC Championship.
Karen Hansen (Goshen, NY) scored both goals in East Stroudsburg’s win and was named the Championship’s most valuable player. Hansen’s first goal, the equalizer, came off an indirect free kick in the 73rd minute from 15 yards out.
Hansen’s game winner came five minutes later as she received a crossing pass from Teri Meierhofer (Livingston, NJ) that Bloomsburg goalkeeper Amy Linn (Harrisburg) missed deflecting on the cross.
Bloomsburg grabbed the early lead in the 11th minute when Rebecca Creedon (Woodburg, NJ) pounded in a rebounding shot. Creedon received a corner kick from Denise Pecoraro (Basking Redge, NJ) and headed the ball off the East Stroudsburg goalpost which returned to Creedon’s foot for the goal.
East Stroudsburg’s men nabbed their ninth PSAC title in twenty-five years and sixth in eleven meetings over Lock Haven.
Mike Feniger (Mechanicsburg) got East Stroudsburg on the board first scoring on a two on one breakaway 20 minutes into the match. Feniger received a centering pass from Jason Lindsay (Trinidad) and stuck the ball in the upper lefthand corner of the goal.
Not two minutes later Lock Haven’s Matt Ford (England) scored on a penalty kick to equalize after East Stroudsburg goalkeeper Jason Petronis (Morgantown, WV) tripped LHU’s Steve Warren (Wallingford) on a breakaway.
The Warriors answered quickly with the game-winner when Keith Schlegel (Fleetwood) drilled an indirect kick from 25 yards out pass the outstretched hands of Lock Haven goalie Rob Thompson (England). Schlegel’s goal capped a five minute span which saw three goals scored and give East Stroudsburg a 2-1 edge at intermission. Schlegel scored a similar goal for the game winner in the Warriors 3-2 win over Lock Haven in last year’s PSAC title match.
Lock Haven pressed the action the entire second half but could never equalize.
Derek Cossaboon added the insurance goal for East Stroudsburg with 6 minutes to play when he took a Jason Lindsay pass and rifled it 20 yards from the right side of the field into the lefthand corner of the Lock Haven goal.
Lock Haven’s Ford and East Stroudsburg’s Feniger were name Co-MVPs of the Championship tilt.
