MANSFIELD WINS THIRD PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE BASEBALL TITLE

Mansfield won its third Pennsylvania Conference baseball championship last Saturday by beating Lock Haven, 4-1 and 4-3, in two straight games of a best-of-three play off at Woolrich, Pa.

The Mounties, Eastern Division champions, had won previous conference titles in 1961 and 1970. Lock Haven, the Western Division winner, has never won a PC baseball crown.

Righthander Mike Tancredi allowed only a first-inning run and scattered eight hits in pitching Mansfield to the first-game victory. A ninth-inning hit by Tim June and the outstanding play of shortstop Glenn Fisher were the keys in the second game.

In the opener, the Mounties scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the lead. Denny Logan’s single and three straight walks resulted in the first run and singles by Scott Smith and Jim Pupo accounted for the second. Andy Murdock’s triple provided two insurance runs in the eighth inning.

In the second game, Mansfield trailed, 3-2, entering the bottom of the ninth. Logan singled and Cy Falatko walked. June, a pinch-hitter, then belted a drive to right-centerfield to bring home the tying and winning runs.

Fisher had three hits in the game, scored one run, drove in another and made an unbelievable catch on a line drive to thwart a potential big Lock Haven rally.

The Bald Eagles’ leaders were Ed Stum with three hits in the first game and Dave Royer who went four for four in the nightcap.
