KUTZTOWN – Lock Haven had a weekend their team, coaches and fans may never forget at the Pennsylvania Conference Tournament. The Eagles, under third year coach Frank Scarfo did the impossible, won the state title and advanced to the national tournament.

Lock Haven (21-8) had to win three times. On Tuesday the Eagles downed California (19-8) 66-58 in the first round playoffs held at the Haven. Next was the number one team in the country, undefeated Bloomsburg (26-0) the Eastern Division winner and 87-73 victor the first time these two teams met earlier in the season. Ironically that game was at Bloomsburg.

The second time was no contest as the Eagles clawed the Huskies 78-59. In the other semifinal clash Edinboro (21-6) led by talented forwards Montique Wade and Sarah Bishop outlasted a game Kutztown give 82-70. The Golden Bears trailed in the first half 31-17 but stormed back to tie the contest at 53 with 13 minutes left but the Scots pulled away in the final five minutes for the victory. In Saturday’s final a 14-2 Lock Haven spurt in the last four minutes of the first half, gave the Eagles a 37-29 lead. It was an advantage the Eagles never lost as they survived a late Edinboro run to win their second state title. The first came in 1985.

Lock Haven forward Maryellen Jaskuta (Macungie, PA) led a balanced Eagle attack. She scored 31 points, pulled down 17 rebounds, stole four passes and handed out seven assists in the two wins. For her efforts Jaskuta, who keyed the win over Bloomsburg with 17 points and 12 rebounds, was named this week’s Pennsylvania Conference Player of the Week. Named to the honor roll were Kutztown’s Sherry Szczuka and Melissa Boettger, Theresa Lorenzi of Bloomsburg and Edinboro’s Montique Wade and Sarah Bishop.

Bloomsburg by virtue of its outstanding year (26-1) and place atop the national polls for the entire regular season, advanced to the national playoffs along with Lock Haven.
