(California, Pa) - For the third time in as many years, the California women's basketball team can call themselves PSAC champions. Playing in the title game for the fourth year in a row, host California downed Shippensburg University, 87-54, avenging its only loss of the year in the process.

The Vulcans started the game with a flurry, scoring the first 13 points of the contest over a six and a half minute span. The host school would extend the lead to 21-4 just over the halfway point of the first stanza when Lisa Guttuso hit a lay-up.

Shippensburg then went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 23-14 with 5:42 left. California would answer right back, though, by forging a 39-25 halftime lead. Shippensburg never really threatened from the time it closed within nine. The Vulcans outscored their guests, 64-40, from that point until the final buzzer.

Championship MVP Sara McKinney had 17 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and six steals in the title game. She was joined by Becky Siembak (20 pts, 7 rb), Sameera Philyaw (14 pts, 12 rb) and Megan Storck (12 pts, 9 ast) and Guttuso (13 pts) in leading the Vulcans.

The Vulcans stand at 29-1 and are likely a No. 1 seed for the upcoming NCAA East Regional.

Shippensburg was led by Jennifer Scaffidi with 20 points.

California (2002-04) and Shippensburg (1996-01) have combined to win the last nine PSAC Championships.
