BLOOMSBURG – Indiana (Pa.) won its first Pennsylvania Conference title as the Indians downed Millersville, 68-50, in the title game held at Clarion. For the Indians, under Coach Jan Kiger, it was their first appearance in the championship game, while coach Deb Schlegel’s Millersville club was making its second-straight showing in the championship game after winning the title in 1987. The Marauders also won the conference crown in 1984.

Indiana (17-13) took control of the game in the early stages of the second half expanding a 30-22 halftime lead by scoring the first eight points after the intermission. Millersville (16-10) couldn’t come any closer than a margin of 15 after that spurt and fell for the first time in three championship games. Patti Connaghan led the winners with 14 points and Leanne Santacroce added 12. Karen Armold and Ginny Ackiewicz had 10 points apiece for the losers.

The Indians reached the title game with a 77-71 win over Bloomsburg (21-6) in the semifinals as Jan Lightcap led four players in double figures with 21 points. Sherri Leysock contributed 20, Connaghan had 14, and Margo Hinton added 11 in the winning effort.

Millersville, which won the title a year ago after finished third in the Eastern Division, had visions of similar happenings this season as the Marauders were the PC East’s second-place unit this season. Similar to last year, the Marauders defeated Western Division champion Clarion in the semifinals to advance to the championship game. Their 57-55 overtime win was sparked by Armold and Ackiewicz again as they had 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Indiana took over that role this year as Kiger’s squad was the PC West’s third-place finisher but went on the road to defeat Lock Haven (15-13) by a score of 96-81 in the preliminary round and then marched through Bloomsburg and Millersville. In the other first-round contest, Millersville handed West Chester (12-16) a 77-71 setback to eliminate the Rams.
