KUTZTOWN MEN, MILLERSVILLE WOMEN WIN PSAC TENNIS TITLE
 
KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University’s men and Millersville University’s women won the 2002 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tennis Championships Sunday Afternoon at Kutztown University.
 
On the men’s side, Kutztown came from behind to beat Bloomsburg, 5-3. The Huskies won two of the three doubles matches, getting victories from Kris Shumway/Mike McGrath at #1 and Mark Vellek/Kurt Caster at #2. Velmurugan Annamalai and Gustavo Boratto were winners from KU at #3 doubles.
 
In singles, Kutztown won four of the five complete matches to secure the victory. Johannes Wingerter (#2), Guillermo Ramos (#5) and Gustavo Boratto (#6) each picked up singles wins for Kutztown, before Alok Bhide clinched the championship with a 6-3, 7-5 win at #3 singles. Shumway won at #1 singles for the Huskies, while Annamalai and Vellek did not compete their #4 singles match.
 
The win for Kutztown is the third consecutive for the Golden Bears, and it marks the first time in school history that any team has won three-straight PSAC Championships.
 
On the women’s side, the finals came down to the last match, with Abbie Sweitzer breaking a 4-4 tie with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #2 singles. Millersville jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles, with Sweitzer and Kristina Eger winning at #2, and Kate Opilo/Kristi Lynn Miller winning #3. BU’s Ering Bartsch and Katie Kochera won #1 doubles.
 
In singles, the teams split the six seeds evenly. Bloomsburg’s Bartsch (#1), Beth Fulton (#3) and Julianne Bramante (#4) were winners, while Millersville got wins from Sweitzer (#2), Eger (#5) and Kristy Lynn Miller (#6).
 
The Marauders captured their fifth-straight PSAC women’s championship.
 
Both finals matches began at Kutztown University’s Keystone Courts, but had to be completed at the Westend Racquet Club in Allentown due to rain.
