2003 PSAC Women's Tennis Championship

BLOOMSBURG—The Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team claimed its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tennis championship since 1981 with a 5-2 win over Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon.

The Rock’s Ella Reilly was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Slippery Rock jumped out to 2-1 lead after doubles action with wins at numbers one and two. The sister act of Ashley And Christy Michaux won at number one, 8-3, while Rielly and her teammate Jessica Bungo won 8-4 at number two. The Huskies victory in doubles play came at number three from Brande Hansteen and Lauren Colfer by a score of 8-2.

In singles play, the Rock picked up victories at two and four to take a 4-1 lead before the Huskies got a win at number six from Brande Hansteen, 6-3, 6-1. With the Huskies leading in matches being played at number one and five, the match came down to the number three players from each team, Christy Michaux for the Rock and Miranda Campbell for the Huskies.

After Campbell won the first set, 6-1, Michaux came back with wins in the next two sets, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Rock the title.

Before this championship, the last Rock PSAC women’s tennis title was in 1981 giving them back-to-back titles after also claiming the crown in 1980.

Bloomsburg has won the title outright on four occasions and shared the title three times.
