BLOOMSBURG WINS TEAM TITLE AT PSAC WOMEN’S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP MEET SATURDAY

ERIE, PA – Bloomsburg won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s tennis championship Saturday by capturing five of six ingles titles, plus a doubles trophy, in the final rounds of a two-day tournament at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Bloomsburg, defending champion of the tourney, had gone into Saturday’s action with a two-point lead over PSAC Eastern Division rival Millersville. Final team points, though, showed Bloom winning 31-24.

Repeating singles titles won in ’95 for Bloomsburg were sophomores Amy Koontz (Bedford, Pa.) and Cara Evangelista (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny). Freshman Cara Fiore, who has not lost a match this season, and Danielle Faretta (Altoona) were first-time winners, as was sophomore Lisa Curran.

With Bloomsburg being topseeded in every event of the tourney, Millersville posted upsets in three flights. Freshman Brianna Peiffer (Lancaster/Warwick) won at second singles and teamed with sophomore Kristen Maneval, whose hometown is Bloomsburg, for a doubles crown.

The Millersville duo of Maia Marmor and Kelly Whisman (Lancaster/Manheim Township) also copped a doubles win as the Lady Marauders claimed what is believed to be their highest rank in the 20-year history of the tournament. Bloomsburg’s lone doubles win was provided by Fiore and Lee Clare.
