DUBOIS, PA. – Slippery Rock University won the 1994 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) golf championship today, edging IUP (Indiana University-Pa.) by eight strokes.
Held at Treasure Lake Country Club’s Silver Course in DuBois, Pa. and hosted by Clarion University, Slippery Rock posted a two-day, 54-hole total of 1158. IUP finished second with a team total of 1166. Millersville was third with 1200, West Chester fourth with 1217, Clarion fifth with 1225 and Edinboro sixth with 1289.
Slippery Rock, who Monday led IUP by fourteen shots after a 27-hole total of 569, shot a second day score of 589. IUP battled back into contention with a second day score of 583, but fell eight strokes short.
The Rockets won the PSAC’s behind the strength of the play from medalist Greg Downer and teammate Mike Ferry who was second. Downer carded a six over par total of 222 for 54-holes, while Ferry notched an eight over par 224 to place second.
IUP’s Mike Wah finished third with a nine over total of 225 and teammate Brett Rosenberger was fourth carding a 231.
The top seven players earn PSAC first team honors. Finishing in a tie for fifth were Millersville’s Jason Arnold and Pete Kowalinski at 233, while Clarion’s Chris Brosius, IUP’s David Ferg and Slippery Rock’s Rob Voltz all tied for seventh at 235.
Following the tournament, Downer was voted by the coaches as the PSAC “Player of the Year”.
The team championship was the second straight title for Slippery Rock, who also won in 1993. SRU also won the PSAC’s in 1988, 87, and 85. IUP has won 7 titles since 1981 including four straight PSAC crowns from 1989-92. Other titles were in 1981, 83, 84, 86, 89, 90 and 91. Clarion won the other title in 1982.
Each team was permitted a total of seven entries, with the tope five scores counting after each 18-holes towards the team score.
