LEBANON – For the first time in its history, the Millersville University golf team ahs won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship.

Paced by superb play from freshman Kris Rudy (Berwick) and sophomore Chad Schulze (Lebanon/Northern Lebanon), the Marauders gained a deadlock with defending champion IUP with 608 strokes apiece.

However, Millersville was awarded the title based on the fifth score of the second day. Sophomore Mike Funk (Paradise/Pequea Valley) tallied a final round 80 to beat out Mike Drexiere of IUP, who shot 87.

Rudy earned medalist honors when he shot a four-over-par 146 (74-72) in the 36-hole tournament, and Schulze (148) finished third capped by firing a two-over-par 73 on Sunday at Royal Oaks Golf Club.

Senior Mike Trout (Quarryville/Solanco) and freshman Andrew Morgan (Palmyra) shot sub-80 rounds Sunday (76 and 78, respectively), to give the Marauders a four-player total of 299 on the final day.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” said Millersville coach Scott Vandegrift. “We stayed poised and confident over the final three holes today, because I knew we were neck-and-neck with IUP and had to keep play well right to the end.”

According to Vendegrift, Millersville gained the tie with IUP when Schulze drained to pressure-packed five-foot putt for par on the 18th in the final threesome.

Millersville avenged losses to IUP and Slippery Rock, seeded second and fourth for the NCAA Division II North Region tournament May 3—5, by coming up big in its final performance this season.
