BLOOMSBURG – Millersville won its first title since 1956 with a 100-94 victory over California in the 27th version of the Pennsylvania Conference Championship game to cap the 1986-87 conference season. The Marauders were making their second appearance in the championship final since they playoff format was adopted in the 1961 campaign and got revenge for the loss they suffered in their initial showing two years ago when California scored an 81-79 upset. For the Vulcans it was the fourth time they played in the final contest, and they finished the season under first-year head coach Jim Boone at 17-12.

Coach John Kochan’s Millersville club, currently ranked number two among the nation’s NCAA Division II schools, will take a 26-3 record into next weekend’s Eastern Regional tourney, facing St. Michaels of Vermont. Lock Haven (21-8), which enjoyed an outstanding season before being ousted by California, received an at-large bid to the North Central Regional to meet St. Could St. in the first round.

The teams had advanced to Saturday night’s title contest by winning their respective division titles on Wednesday. Millersville downed Bloomsburg, 87-73, to capture the Eastern Division, while California defeated Lock Haven, 86-84, to win the PC West laurels. In first-round playoff games on Monday, Bloomsburg advanced to the division final with a 70-62 win over Kutztown and Lock Haven beat Indiana, 78-71.
