KUTZTOWN – Millersville University captured its second PSAC title in the past three years but the job wasn’t east as the Marauders (24-6) edged by Lock Haven (22-6) 90-85 and Bloomsburg (26-4) 89-85 in games that weren’t decided till the final minutes.
John Kochan’s club earned the automatic bid to the national tournament while both Bloomsburg and Lock Haven received at large berths to the 32 team affair. Millersville rode the shooting prowess of sophomore guard Mike Monroe (6-3, Philadelphia, PA) to the title as Monroe tallied 26 points in the state final against the Huskies who refused to fold. For the two games Monroe was 17 of 29 from the field (65.4%) including 11 of 15 against the Huskies. Monroe totaled 40 points in two games along with 16 rebounds, 11 assists and two steals. Monroe, who was named with week’s conference Player of the Week needed every point at Bloomsburg’s Craig Phillips scored 30 points including 25 in the second half on 11 of 15 shootings (6 of 8 from three point range) from the field. Phillips was named to the weekly honor roll along with Lock Haven’s Tony Bacon and Shippensburg forward Keith Hill.
In the semifinals Bloom overcame an early 11-2 Shippensburg (13-15) advantage to easily win a berth in the finals as the Huskies prevailed 74-56. The other semifinal wasn’t decided till the final minutes as Lock Haven came from nine points down in the first half to lead by two (68-66) with nine minutes left. The Marauders scored nine unanswered points to regain the lead for good but had to survive several Lock Haven runs to advance to the finals.
The NCAA Eastern Regional playoffs are at Millersville March 16-17 with Philadelphia Textile the winner of the Mideast Collegiate Conference, Millersville, Bloomsburg and Lock Haven the four participants.
