KUTZTOWN – The impossible became reality last weekend in the Pennsylvania Conference championships at Slippery Rock as unheralded East Stroudsburg (20-12), the second place team in the Eastern Division, pulled off two shockers to become the Pennsylvania Conference champion and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA East Region tourney this Friday and Saturday (March 16-17).

The Warriors, winners of three games just three years ago, were led by three time PC East Player of the Year Jonathan Roberts and PC East Coach of the Year Sal Mentesana, who never let his players give up. Roberts had 52 points in the Final Four including 25 points and 13 rebounds as the Warriors upset East champ Millersville (20-9) 108-102 in two overtimes in the championship game. Roberts three point play in the second OT with the score tied at 102 gave ESU the win with 46 seconds left. His block 12 seconds later on Millersville guard Lance Gelnett’s shot iced the game as ESU got the ball back. Warriors Ed Urie had 25 points in the win.

On Friday night ESU pulled off the first shocker stunning the West Champ and second ranked team in the country Slippery Rock (23-4) 103-102 in overtime behind Roberts 27 points and 13 rebounds and four blocks. For his play in the tourney Roberts is this week’s Pennsylvania Conference Player of the Week. Joining him on the honor roll were Urie, Millersville’s Jon Dunmeyer (46 points) and Gelnetet (52 points), Myron Brown of Slippery Rock, Rob Wilson of the Rock and Lock Haven’s Dean Kriebel.

Notes – Millersville reached the finals downing Lock Haven (22-7) 82-68. In the first round of the playoffs East Stroudsburg outlasted Cheyney (18-9) 75-72 while Lock Haven eliminated Edinboro 84-75. The East Region playoffs are at Gannon University with Slippery Rock, ESU, Gannon and C.W. Post as the four teams. Edinboro’s (22-5) chances of entering the tourney were dimmed with the tourney going to ESU.
