California Defeats IUP in 36t Annual PSAC “State Game”
(written by California University)

CALIFORNIA PA – California University of Pennsylvania won the 36th Annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men’s Basketball “State Game” with a 87-84 victory over Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday night at California’s Hamer Hall. This is Cal’s third PSAC title in the past five years.

Senior point guard Candice Pickens was named the PSAC Final Four Tournament MVP after a 16-point, 12-assist, and eight-rebound effort. This was the third straight time Call and IUP have met in the state finals with IUP winning in 1995. Cal has now won six PSAC titles in school history (1970, 1985, 1988, 1992, 1994 and 1996). Cal junior Derrick Scott led all scorers with 25 points and made 12 of 13 shots from the floor. Junior Robert Jones added 10 points and nine boards. California is 24-5 overall and receives an automatic NCAA berth.

IUP (23-6) was led by senior Robert Misenko’s 23 points and sex rebounds. Other top IUP scores included Kirk Williams (17), Derrick Freeman (14) and Vince Coppola (12). IUP, two-time defending East Regional champion, is expected to receive a third consecutive NCAA bid on Sunday. Cal will be making its fifth straight NCAA tourney appearance.

Under 10th-year head coach Jim Boone (225-70), Cal has appeared in seven of the last 10 PSAC title games. IUP was making its third straight PSAC championship appearance.

The NCAA II tourney bids will be released on Sunday, March 3 at 6pm.
