SHIPPENSBURG MEN, CLARION WOMEN WIN PSAC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Shippensburg’s men and Clarion’s women won the team championships of the three-day Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) meet that concluded at Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday.

Both teams successfully defended titles won last year. Clarion has on the women’s division in every one of the 19 season the meet has been sponsored beginning in 1976.

Shippensburg men claimed three individual championships in final-day action as defending champion Brian Foley copped the 1650 freestyle, Steve Ludwig the 200 backstroke, and Shawn Wallace the 200 butterfly.

Edinboro, meet runnerup for the first time in its history, was paced by Steve Kast in the 200 breaststroke and by its 300 freestyle relay team.

But the top individual of the entire meet was third-place Clarion’s Dan Stover who won his fourth 1994 title, in the 100 freestyle relay team.

Clarion’s 400 freestyle relay team of Lauri Ratice, Stephanie Kissell, Mara Strelecki and Dawn Jones set a new meet record. Lady Eagle diver Kim Strawbridge, the reigning NCAA II national champ in three-meter diving, kept her 1992 PSAC medal in the event (matching the one-meter title she had retained as well).

Shippensburg, runnerup in the women’s meet, was led by two-event winner Cindy Kepler, who captured the 100 freestyle Saturday.

The day belonged in the large part to West Chester, as it garnered three even titles, by Tracy Horn in the 1650 freestyle, Diane Burkett in the 200 backstroke and Kristen Gilbert in the 200 breaststroke. Horn’s win was her third of the meet, Burkett’s her second.
