1995 PSAC Men's Swimming Championship

CLARION CAPTURES 1995 PSAC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY of PENNSYLVANIA – The Clarion University men’s and women’s teams won the 1995 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimming Championships at West Chester University.
 
At the conclusion of the three-day competition, Clarion’s men finished with 508 points, followed by: Shippensburg 407, West Chester 316, Edinboro 274, Slippery Rock 196, Bloomsburg 153 and Kutztown 120.
 
Clarion’s women totaled 554 points, followed by: IUP 358.5, Bloomsburg 305.5, West Chester 237, Shippensburg 223, Edinboro 159, Lock Haven, 104, Kutztown 70, Slippery Rock 58 and Millersville 34.
 
WCU sophomore Diane Burkett kicked off the final day of competition at WCU’s Graham Natatorium by setting yet another PSAC record with a NCAA Division II Nationals qualifying time of 2:04.78 in the 200 backstroke. Clarion’s Regan Rickert (2:08.3), and Bloomsburg’s Heather Jones (2:09.06) also qualified for the NCAA’s.
 
For the men, Shippensburg junior Steve Ludwig took the top honors with a NCAA qualifying time of 1:52.95. Freshman Ryan Bower of Clarion also qualified for the Nations with 1:53.86.
 
The 100 free winners were IUP’s Tawney Nardozza (52.44) and Clarion’s Dan Stoner (42.04). Both seniors qualified for the NCAA’s, while Clarion’s Kelly Gould, with a time of 52.90, also earned a trip to nationals.
 
The women’s 200 fly featured dual Bloomsburg NCAA qualifiers as senior Stephanie Humphries won the event (2:06.72) and senior Patty Kirn also qualified with 2:08.23. Shippensburg’s Roger Weikert captured the men’s title (1:54.84).
 
In the 200 breaststroke, Bloom’s Heather Towne notched the victory with a NCAA qualifying time of 2:26.26. Shippensburg’s Thadd Pingle took the men’s 200 breaststroke with a qualifying time of 2:06.62 and Clarion’s Scott Rosenbaum also qualified with a 2:07.43. Pingle’s time set a Graham Natatorium record.
 
The final event of the championships, the 400 free relay, saw IUP’s women set a PSAC and a Graham Natatorium record with a time of 3:31.84, while Clarion finished with a 3:32.27. Both teams qualified for Nationals. The men’s 400 free relay was captured by Edinboro (3:05.63), who will also make a trip to the NCAA’s.
 
The 1995 NCAA Division II Championships will be held March 8-11 in Canton, Ohio.
