CLARION SWEEPS PSAC MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

WEST CHESTER, PA – The Clarion University men’s and women’s swimming teams have swept the 1997 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.
The three-day event, held at West Chester University’s Graham Natatorium, concluded on Saturday evening with Clarion’s women taking their 22nd straight league title and the men cruising to a 260-point victory over second-place Slippery Rock.
The Clarion men were led by Andy Smearman, who won the 200-yard breast (2:07.0), John Williams, who took the 200 back (1:55.74) and Eric Fringer, who captured the 200 fly (1:53.20). Clarion’s 400 medley relay team was also victorious (3:08.31).
The only non-Clarion Men’s victory of the evening went to Slippery Rock’s Ryan Phillips in the 100 free (47.13).
The Clarion women posted three first-place finishes on the final evening of competition. The 400 free relay squad took first place with a time of 3:31.89, while freshman Nikki DiLoreto (200 breast – 2:24.62) and Jana Salisberry (100 free – 53.67) claimed their respective events.
Kutztown’s Claudine Gruver captured the 200 back in a time of 2:03.54, while West Chester University’s Diane Burkett won the 200 fly (2:10.06).
