RECAP
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. --- The 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships concluded Monday afternoon in Bloomsburg, Pa.
Men’s Singles
Edinboro’s Vitor Albanese continued his impressive career while claiming his third consecutive individual championship. He is the lone men’s tennis player in PSAC history to accomplish the feat. Albanese was challenged throughout the bracket after being pushed to three sets in three of his four contests.
The Fighting Scot dropped the opening set of the championship against Kutztown’s Martin Munoz, 7-5, before rebounding to take the final two sets, 6-2, 10-6, respectively.
Albanese thwarted Millersville’s Peter Landis in the quarterfinals before fending off Mercyhurst’s Cormac McCooey in three sets in the semis.
Albanese earned the title in a thriller against Mercyhurst’s Ruri Fraser, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-8.
He is the only EU men’s tennis player to have an individual championship to his name.
Men’s Doubles
Albanese teamed with Daniel Fernandez to win the men’s tennis doubles championship. The duo defeated all of their opponents by identical 8-1 scores.
Albanese is the first men’s player to claim championships in both singles and doubles play since 2013.
Women’s Singles
Mercyhurst’s Saioa Gomez de Segura won her fourth consecutive women’s tennis individual title. She is the only PSAC athlete to accomplish the feat. None of her opponents won more than three games in any match.
Segura defeated teammate Kayla Frost in the championship bout, 6-0, 6-2.
Segura is the lone Laker to have claimed a title since the inception of the championship in 2004.
Women’s Doubles
Gomez joined forces with teammate Adina Spahalic to claim an entertaining championship match against IUP’s Luise von Agris and Nicole Beidacki, 8-6.
It marked the first time that MU claimed the doubles championship.
Gomez became the first PSAC athlete to win both the singles and doubles championship since 2013.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. --- The 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Tennis Championships are set to take place at the Burt Reese Tennis Center in Bloomsburg, Pa.
Action will commence Saturday, September 30 and end Monday, October 2.
Edinboro’s Vitor Albanese will look to three-peat as the champion in the men’s singles bracket. In 2016, Albanese became the first men’s tennis player in PSAC history to earn consecutive championships. He followed suit by earned Athlete of the Year merits in the spring.
Mercyhurst’s Nenad Terzic seeks his third consecutive championship in the men’s doubles bracket. He will be teamed up with his third different partner in as many years. No PSAC men’s player has been a part of three consecutive doubles championships.
In women’s singles play, MU’s Saioa Gomez de Segura seeks the four-peat and has already established herself as the only PSAC woman to win three consecutive singles crowns.
IUP’s Luise von Agris returns with hopes to repeat as a member of the women’s doubles championship duo. She joined Jarka Petercakova to accomplish the feat in 2016.
The doubles brackets will open play on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The men’s doubles final is slated for Sunday at 9 a.m. while the singles final is set for 2:45 p.m.
The women’s doubles final will start at 9 a.m. Monday while the singles championship match is set for 11 a.m.
