PSAC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

PSYCH SHEET

York, Pa. – The York County YMCA and Graham Aquatic Center will host the 2014 PSAC Swimming Championships from Thursday, February 20 through Sunday, February 23. This year’s event marks the 56th year for the men’s championship, and the 39th year for the women’s championship.

MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

West Chester is seeking its 16th consecutive conference championship and its 27th overall. However, West Chester’s 15-straight PSAC titles isn’t the longest winning streak in league history. Clarion won the conference crown from 1971-1989 spanning 19 years. Clarion’s last conference title came in 1998 after winning the crown the previous three seasons. The Golden Eagles have earned 24 conference titles, while Shippensburg has four and Slippery Rock won in 1966.

PSAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year Bradley Strathmeyer of West Chester is back for his sophomore season. In his rookie season, Strathmeyer set two PSAC All-Time individual records, and three PSAC Championship records. He currently holds the all-time record in the 500 freestyle (4:24.74) and in the 1650 freestyle (15:28.66), while also setting a new PSAC Championship mark in the 1000 freestyle (9:20.94). Strathmeyer is seeded second in the 200 (1:41.44) and 1650 freestyle (15:50.10), and third in the 500 (4:32.99) and 1000 freestyle (9:31.96).

100 and 200 breaststroke PSAC record holder Bogdan Grebenyuk of West Chester holds the fastest seed times entering the championship in both events, while teammate David McCormick is seeded just behind Grebenyuk, while also being seed first in both the 200 (1:49.88) and 400 individual medley (3:56.94).

West Chester’s Victor Polyakov sits seeded first in four individual events including the 100 freestyle (45.24), 200 freestyle (1:36.86), 500 freestyle (4:20.26), and
1000 freestyle (9:14.64).

In 2013 Bloomsburg took second for the first time since 1968 with 482 points. Reigning PSAC Freshman of the Year Jake Harner leads the Huskies after setting five individual Bloomsburg records and taking All-PSAC honors in the 200 individual medley last season. He is seeded second in the 200 individual medley (1:51.62) and fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:05.33).

Also in the pool for the Huskies is distance swimmer Brandon Sherbo. He currently is Bloomsburg’s record holder in the 100 and 1650 freestyle events and is seeded fifth in the 1650 (16:04.76). Sherbo is also seeded eighth in the 500 (4:39.13) and 1000 freestyle (9:46.99).

Clarion placed third in the team race in 2013 with 452 points and is led by senior Derek Nelson. Nelson is seeded fourth in the 100 breaststroke (56.48) and fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.15). Last season Nelson took third in the 100 breaststroke, and touched the wall just behind first place McCormick of West Chester in the 200 breaststroke.

Gannon, fourth in 2013 with 433 points, has been led this season by the efforts of sophomore Denys Fedorchenko. He is seeded first in the 200 butterfly (1:50.84), second in the 400 individual medley (3:57.84), third in the 100 freestyle (46.07), and fourth in the 1000 freestyle (9:40.12).

Other top seeded individuals that will compete include, Edinboro’s Micah Cattell in the 50 freestyle (20.73), IUP’s Steve Long in the 100 butterfly (49.30), West Chester’s Michael O’Brien in the 100 (50.81) and 200 backstroke (1:51.22), and West Chester’s Jared Haley in the 1650 freestyle (15:39.02).

Shippensburg will also send swimmers to compete in the 2014 Championship to round out the seven-team field.

Clarion took second place at last season’s championship meet with 442.5 points, and will look to the 2013 PSAC Freshman of the Year Gabriella Schaffer. Schaffer took second at the 2013 Championship in the 100 backstroke and is seeded fifth heading into the 2014 championship (57.51).

Also swimming for the Golden Eagles is junior Emilee Gysegem, who touched the wall first in 2:05.33 in the 200 individual medley at the 2013 Championship and also won the 400 individual medley in 4:27.11.
